When is the second part of Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs update going to drop?

Jump To

Minecraft put out Caves & Cliffs part one just the other month and now we're prepping for the next major update. Here's when we think it will arrive.

Latest - New Snapshots arriving

Twitter user Slicedlime is the tech lead for Minecraft Java and regularly releases snapshots for people to try.

Experimental Snapshot 6 just arrived last week, so we should expect some more updates soon.

When Is It Due?

At the moment, we don't have anything too solid to report when it comes to a release date for Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Part Two.

We know that Part One was given a release date of June 8th, which it met, but we've only heard something vague from Mojang regarding Part Two.

This is the first time they've given us a release window for an update, though, so there's certainly some sort of plan in there somewhere. All we know is "Holiday Season" at the moment. This could mean anything from October to January, really. Only time will tell, at this stage.

Caves and Cliffs Update Split Into Two

Minecraft 1.17, the Caves and Cliffs update, is all fans have been looking forward to since its announcement in late 2020.

TWO PARTS: Minecraft Caves and Cliffs has been split into two drops

Mojang have dropped a bombshell however, surprising fans with the reveal that Caves and Cliffs would be split into two different updates.

While overall this seems mostly negative for players, it does mean the massive changes coming in Caves and Cliffs, which would've been the biggest update in Minecraft's history, will now be spaced out.

What Are We Expecting?

Unlike the first Caves and Cliffs update, which Mojang gave a detailed list of features for (which you can read over below) - the second Caves and Cliffs update has been given no content specifics.

From elimination, however, we know some of the bigger changes to expect that won't come around in the first update.

Here's what's scheduled to arrive in the first Minecraft Caves and Cliffs update in Summer:

  • Goats
  • Axolotls
  • Crystals
  • Spyglasses
  • Geodes
  • Tinted Glass
  • Copper
  • Lightning Rods
  • Glow Squids
  • Glow Ink
  • Powder Snow
  • Lush Cave Blocks
  • Dripstone Cave Blocks
  • Deepslate
  • Ore Variants
  • Glow Lichen
  • Multiplayer Sleeping Rule (Java)

With this list, we can expect the second Caves and Cliffs update to contain the following:

  • Cave generation changes
  • Mountain generation changes
  • Ore distribution changes
  • Ore visual changes
  • The Warden
  • Deep Dark biome
  • Skulk blocks
  • Skulk chutes
  • Skulk sensors

The Latest Patch Notes

We don't expect to receive the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs patch notes for update 2 until well after Summer - but that doesn't mean Mojang won't offer them earlier.

Once the patch notes arrive, we'll update with all of the latest information here.
