Minecraft Caves and Cliffs was all set to be the biggest update in the game's storied history - but it has now been split into two parts that will release months apart.
While Mojang gave players a clear breakdown of what will be coming in the first Caves and Cliffs update, things are much less clear with the second.
Here's what we know so far about the second Caves and Cliffs update, slated to launch just in time for the holiday season.
Caves and Cliffs Update Split Into Two
Minecraft 1.17, the Caves and Cliffs update, is all fans have been looking forward to since its announcement in late 2020.
Mojang have dropped a bombshell however, surprising fans with the reveal that Caves and Cliffs would be split into two different updates.
While overall this seems mostly negative for players, it does mean the massive changes coming in Caves and Cliffs, which would've been the biggest update in Minecraft's history, will now be spaced out.
Mojang gave several new details about the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs update in their new announcement - including release date windows for the first time ever!
According to Mojang, the first Caves and Cliffs update release date is in Summer, and the second will arrive around the holiday season.
Unlike the first Caves and Cliffs update, which Mojang gave a detailed list of features for (which you can read over below) - the second Caves and Cliffs update has been given no content specifics.
From elimination, however, we know some of the bigger changes to expect that won't come around in the first update.
Here's what's scheduled to arrive in the first Minecraft Caves and Cliffs update in Summer:
- Tinted Glass
- Lightning Rods
- Glow Squids
- Glow Ink
- Powder Snow
- Lush Cave Blocks
- Dripstone Cave Blocks
- Ore Variants
- Glow Lichen
- Multiplayer Sleeping Rule (Java)
With this list, we can expect the second Caves and Cliffs update to contain the following:
- Cave generation changes
- Mountain generation changes
- Ore distribution changes
- Ore visual changes
- The Warden
- Deep Dark biome
- Skulk blocks
- Skulk chutes
- Skulk sensors
We don't expect to receive the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs patch notes for update 2 until well after Summer - but that doesn't mean Mojang won't offer them earlier.
Once the patch notes arrive, we'll update with all of the latest information here.
