Witchbrook, a gorgeous Stardew Valley-style magic school and life simulator, has been on our radar since its announcement. But since then, how much has been released about it?

Let's get into it.

Who Is Developing Witchbrook?

Witchbrook is being developed by indie developer and publisher, Chucklefish, who are the publisher of Stardew Valley

What Is the Gameplay Like?

If the team behind it aren’t exciting enough. In August 2019, CEO of Chucklefish: Tiy showed off the public Witchbrook Design Document, which gave us a glimpse into what Witchbrook might end up looking like.

The document outlines the general mechanics the game will potentially have, which include: going to school, fishing, potion-making, foraging, artefact hunting, cooking, dating, astrology, crafting, and even wizard duelling.

By the sounds of it, it’s taking the things we loved about Stardew Valley and applying them to a magical world full of witchy storytelling.

The game has dozens of locations and even the option to leave the school grounds and hang out in a nearby town. With a day/night cycle to add to that, players will have to follow nightly curfews and experience varying weather depending on the season.

From the looks of it, Witchbrook will have enough mechanics to make the game just as replayable as Stardew Valley is. According to the document itself

“The world of Witchbrook is simulated in a number of different ways. The intention is to create a living, breathing world which is compelling simply to observe.”

The Project's History

Witchbrook was initially announced to be a similar game named Project Spellbound. However, in March 2020, the name was updated to Witchbrook. Its art style was also altered significantly, moving into a more detailed, isometric, homely aesthetic.

Will It Have Multiplayer?

Nothing has been announced relating to multiplayer or even co-op. However, the fact that Stardew Valley managed to introduce an interesting multiplayer experience should indicate that Chucklefish plans to do the same with Witchbrook.

According to their site, Witchbrook is currently in development and is “quite a while off yet.”

Hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy the wizarding world of Witchbrook soon. It's rumoured to be released at the end of 2021, or early 2022. We can only hope it's that soon.

If you're a fan of farming life simulations, magical schools, and beautiful art, this is the game to be hyped for.
