BREAKING: Matteo Berrettini forced to withdraw from Wimbledon 2022

Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon 2022 after testing positive for COVID-19.

The 26-year-old was scheduled to play Chilean player Cristian Garin on Court 1 later on Tuesday, June 28th, but will play no further part in the 2022 Championships.

Matteo Berrettini Withdraws

Berrettini was tipped as one of the favourites to challenge World No.1 Novak Djokovic for the 2022 Wimbledon Men's Singles title before the news broke on Tuesday morning.

The Italian reached the final of the 2021 Wimbledon Men's Singles, where he lost in four sets to the unflappable Djokovic.

Berrettini becomes the second top-level player to withdraw from this summer's tournament after COVID-19 forced Marin Cilic to pull out.

The World No.6 was expected to challenge Djokovic for the Men's Singles title, but will now be forced to watch from the sidelines.

He becomes another casualty of an eventful first round which saw Hubert Hurkacz defeated by underdog Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Djokovic challenged by South Korean No.1 Kwon Soon-Woo.

Wimbledon 2022 odds: Men's Singles

Rafael Nadal has been boosted into second favourite by the bookies after Berrettini withdrew on Tuesday morning with Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger Aliassime and Stefanos Tsitsipas considered the other major contenders for the 2022 competition.

Andy Murray has been boosted up to 50/1 best price to win his third Wimbledon Men's Singles title after brushing aside the Australian James Duckworth in his first-round fixture, while cult hero Nick Krygios has seen his price to win the tournament drift to 28/1.
