The first game came out as a paid-for game but went free to play years later, as the hype began to whittle down.

However, Blizzard is taking a new approach to the series with whether the second game will be free or not.

So, let's take a look at all of the information we have about if Overwatch 2 will be free-to-play.

Is Overwatch free to play?

Yes, Overwatch 2 will be free to play at its release date on October 4 2022.

Blizzard's original game lost lots of traction without its regular updates. So, by having the sequel free to play with regular updates, the hype will hopefully stay alive for much longer.

The developers have talked about monetisation of the free-to-play game with in-game bonuses.

This will come in the form of battle passes, mythic skins, and an in-game shop to help make sure that the sequel is viable for Blizzard to run.

With the new monetisation system comes a brand new engine too. So, paying out for new content shouldn't feel as bad when it looks that great.
