Southampton 0-2 Liverpool: 5 things we learned

The young Argentine had built a reputation as an uncompromising defender for Valencia, before coaching the club in a short and unhappy spell after his retirement. After leading Alavés to their highest league position in almost two decades last season, he arrived looking to bring the same passion and results to Southampton.

Mauricio Pellegrino, however, has been a disaster on the South Coast. His team have won just one of their last fourteen games, locked in a relegation battle down in 18thplace. After finishing in the Top Ten last year, Southampton are atrophying badly.

Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to surge.This 2-0 win sees them close the gap with Manchester United to just one point. In truth, they were rarely troubled by an insipid Southampton side.
