LoL is heading into Preseason 2024 in full force, with some massive changes already announced, including new items, exciting map changes, and even a new champion. So, there is no better time to go head first into ranked than now.

However, before you do that, it's important that you get familiar with some important concepts, one of them being MMR. MMR is a hidden stat that affects matchmaking, by deciding the skill level of the opponents you are going to face.

MMR might be a hidden stat, but it has a huge impact on your games. So, let's find out how you can check your MMR, and how MMR can affect your games.

How to check your MMR in League of Legends

There is no way to check your MMR on the Riot Games LoL client, but you can do it in many companion apps, and on some unofficial websites as well. Unfortunately, most unofficial websites aren't that precise when it comes to calculating your MMR.

However, there are a few websites that let you calculate your LoL MMR in an easy and precise way. These websites are, HappySmurf, MyLolMMR, and WhatIsMyMMR.

To check your MMR, simply head into one of these three websites, choose your region, and type your summoner name in the search bar. The website will then calculate your MMR and show it to you in a matter of seconds.

Some of these websites will also tell you each is your estimated rank based on your MMR. If your estimated rank is lower than your actual one, that's because you probably haven't been winning a lot of games, and your MMR has taken a huge hit because of that. This can mean you are also just a few games away from demoting.

What is MMR in League of Legends?

As mentioned above, your MMR is used to calculate your skill level. This helps Riot Games match you up with opponents and teammates of the same skill level.

The goal is to avoid creating a situation where you have two teams with a high skill discrepancy, as it creates an unpleasant experience for the players in that game.

Your MMR is affected by the way you perform in ranked matches, and by wins and losses. Wins and losses affect your MMR the most, with wins meaning your MMR goes up while losses mean the reverse.

Even if you don't perform well but win the game, your MMR will be affected positively. While playing like a superstar for five games in a row, but still losing all of them will just mean your MMR will decrease significantly.

It's worth noting that, KDA, CS and gold per minute are the main stats taken into consideration when analyzing a player's performance.

Why is MMR important for League of Legends?

MMR is really important since it affects how much LP you gain per win. If you have a much higher MMR than the rank you're in, you will win many more LPs per win than usual, meaning you will climb much faster.

In some cases, having a high MMR can also make you skip divisions, as you will move up two divisions at once.

However, having a negative MMR has the exact opposite effect. It makes you lose more LPs than the ones you win, which means your climb through the leaderboards will be significantly harder.

Lower MMR also means you will be playing with worse players, in theory, while the level of gameplay in higher MMRs is much better. So, if you want to play against the best of the best, even if just inside your division, make sure you have the highest MMR possible.
