Skill move cancelling was a totally new mechanic in FIFA 21 and it completely took over and dominated the meta!

Now in FIFA 22, it has been tuned down a bit, since the cancel option was removed for certain skill moves and skill moves aren't as relevant anymore.

However, there are still some EXTREMELY effective skill move cancels that can take your game to a whole new level in Ultimate Team.

What is a 'skill move cancel'?

First things first, we need to establish what a skill move cancel actually is and how it works.

The power of the skill move cancel lies in the fact that you stop the animation of the skill move during its course.

Usually, skill moves are quite rigid in the way they are performed, with more or less the exact same outcome or direction in which the player will exit.

If your opponent is an experienced or top-level player, he will recognise the animation and can adjust his defensive positioning depending on what skill move you are trying to perform, meaning it is quite easy to dispossess the opponent.

However, when you cancel the skill move, you stop the animation and you can surprise the defender with a totally different outcome.

How to perform a 'skill move cancel'

Getting the hang of the skill move cancel won't take long, as it is very simple in practice.

All you need to do is hold L2 + R2 (or LT + RT) during the particular skill move animation.

The direction of the left stick will determine the exit direction of your player.

The timing is also quite important, as you can cancel the skill move at different moments.

Open-up fake shot

The open-up fake shot itself is quite a powerful skill move in FIFA 22, with the animation almost giving the player a speed boost as he exits.

To do an open-up fake shot you need to hold L1 (or LB) whilst you do the normal input for a fake shot.

The open-up fake shot animation is quite unique and is therefore easy to read once you know it, but when you cancel it mid-animation, you can leave your opponent utterly confused!

The opponent expects the speed boost and exit in one direction and all of a sudden you turn out of the skill move and will have space where the defender has left behind him.

Faint forward and turn

The faint forward and turn is a really easy skill move to cancel in FIFA 22.

You can perform the faint forward and turn by flicking the right stick twice in the opposite direction of where your player is running.

Once again, it has a very unique animation, making it easy for a high-level opponent to recognise - which makes it even better to cancel!

This skill move cancel is particularly effective on the wing, as it can send the defender running in the completely wrong direction in a 1v1 situation.

At the moment when your player is about to turn, you cancel the animation and just keep going forward while the opponent stops since he thinks you're going to turn.

Shot cancel

The shot cancel is one of the most effective cancel mechanics but is also one of the toughest to successfully pull off.

The reason for this is that EA has implemented hundreds of different shot animations, therefore it can be very difficult to hit the right timing with a cancel.

However, when you get the timing right, it can perform miracles in the box!

A good shot cancel will trigger block animations from the defenders, so it can be a really effective tool to create a good shooting opportunity in those tight spaces inside the box.

To do a shot cancel all you need to do is power up a shot and then perform the cancel input.
