Where is Elden Ring set?

Elden Ring is a huge game with even bigger ambitions. With a big open world and tonnes of unique areas, there's so much to explore. Here's what you should know about its setting.

LATEST - Out Now

After years of waiting, Elden Ring is finally here - meaning you can explore the world for yourself. The great thing about it is that your experience of the world will likely be very different from everyone else.

The lore is there to explore and draw your own conclusions.

Where is Elden Ring set?

Elden Ring is set in the "Lands Between", a mysterious world invented by George R.R Martin. As is the case with From Software games, the world itself is far less important than those who inhabit it. Where it gets its best lore from is how people are subjected to pain under the constraints of a world not built for them.

We don't know all that much about the "Lands Between" just yet but we should receive much more information over the coming weeks. We already know a great deal about its gameplay and bosses so this is a good way of understanding its architecture.

The swap to open-world design and the ability to ride a horse must mean it's much bigger than previous From Software games, giving us an indicator of what to expect. It is all split up into six unique areas, all with their own ruling demigods. These will piece together to make your character stronger and more equipped to deal with what the world throws at you.

Is Elden Ring set in the Dark Souls universe?

As of right now, there is no confirmation that the Dark Souls and Elden Ring worlds are linked and, considering Sekiro and Bloodborne don't have a direct link, it seems likely it will be detached. Sometimes, trying to link ideas too hard can make the entire process feel a bit shallow. From Software games are a lot of things but they aren't shallow.

In an interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki said:

“With a larger world, new systems and action mechanics inevitably become necessary,” he said. “In that sense, I think that Elden Ring is a more natural evolution of Dark Souls.”
