After nearly four years in the Xbox Series X|S & PS5 era, and with EA Sports College Football being released only on current-gen consoles, players thought this was the year Madden 25 would finally leave the old-gen platforms behind.
However, that is not the case, as the game is also coming to Xbox One, and PS4.
Sports games have previously been released on the Xbox One and PS4, so this isn't anything new, but with EA Sports seemingly moving away from old-gen platforms in College Football 25, it does send a mixed message.
Even though it didn't happen this year, it seems the Madden franchise is destined to leave behind old-gen platforms sooner rather than later.
Madden 25 Cover Athlete
The Madden 25 cover athlete has been revealed, and it's no other than the 49ers superstar running back Christian McCaffrey. This choice was a little surprising and left the Madden community divided. It's hard to say McCaffrey doesn't deserve it though as one of the most consistent and devastating offensive players in the league.
This marks the first time a non-quarterback has been on the cover since Antonio Brown graced the cover of Madden 19. It's also worth noting that McCaffrey is part of the Madden 25 99 Club.
All New Features
Every year, fans have a wishlist for Madden, and most of the time, it doesn't match what EA puts in the game.
Last year's hype was around an upgrade to the player motion in the Frostbite engine, AI logic (especially in blocking), mini-games in Franchise Mode, and upgraded animations.
This year the title focused on improving the FieldSense technology by introducing the BOOM Tech feature. This feature makes tackles, stiff arms, and dives, more realistic, and it does so by using the player's ratings to calculate and generate "authentic physical outcomes" for every tackle.
New ball-carrier, passing, catching, and blocking animations were introduced, as well as more control over all of these features, which aims to deliver "dynamic and realistic playmaking".
Franchise mode received a lot of changes. The NFL Draft Night got some updates to make it as authentic and immersive as possible. Dynamic storylines were added to the mode, and a new HUB was introduced.
Crossplay arrived at Franchise mode, and that is also the case for the highly requested Team Builder feature. This feature allows players to create their team from scratch, using custom badges, uniforms, fields, helmets, and much more.
New commentary and presentation features were also introduced. The commentary team of Mike Tirico and Greg Olsen, arguably the best commentary duo in the sport right now, as well as Kate Scott and Brock Huard, were added to the game.
In Superstar mode, character Creation now offers many more options for players to customize their avatar, including tattoos, something the community had been asking for a long time.
Pre-set archetypes were included, to help players choose what type of archetype they prefer, and the NFL combine is now incredibly important, as it can also impact player attribute ratings.
Superstar Quests were revamped, and are now performance-driven, they are based on the players' skillset, answers, and journey. Quests will also change according to the team's form, making them more realistic.
The popular Superstar Showdown mode returns, but with a lot more events, and a new mode called Challenge mode, where players can face off against their friends.
This made the mode much more immersive, authentic, and entertaining.
