FM17: Sunderland Player Ratings Revealed

Here's the Sunderland team on Football Manager 2017 with all the player ratings and values revealed and broken down to help you understand your squad.

To stay in the Premier League, you have decent enough squad to achieve this with the right sort of tactics suited to your players. Make no mistakes, however, it won’t be easy and you’ll probably spend some time in the relegation zone unless you add a quality name or two to improve this squad.

With Pickford, Ndong and Defoe you have a soid enough core to build around, but Sunderland, in my opinion, lack a quality centre-back and leading playmaker, so this is where you should invest your money. Perhaps a loan signing or two would be your best bet given your small transfer and wage budgets. Moreover, Sunderland are somewhat shortstaffed in midfield so try and focus your attention in this area to begin with.

Sunderland’s starting transfer and wage budgets are as follows:

Transfer budget: £12,000,000

Wage budget: £1,043,973

GoalkeeperVito Mannone3328Italy£6m
GoalkeeperJordan Pickford3422England£6m

Both Vito Mannone and Jordan Pickford start on three-star ability, though the latter is younger –which could be a negative, for sure- and has the potential to rise to four stars, so I recommend persisting with Pickford from the start. Mannone makes for good back-up as well.

DefenderBilly Jones3.53.529England£6.75m
DefenderJavi Manquillo3422Spain£2.6m
DefenderPatrick Van Aanholt3325Netherlands£5.75m

Javi Manquillo has the potential to reach four-star ability and you should persist with him as a fullback as he begins at the same level as van Aanholt. I don’t think Sunderland’s centre-backs are good enough. To stay in the league, sure, but to challenge for the top half, I don’t think so. Perhaps have O’Shea tutor McNair for the season.

O’Shea, mind, is now 35 and he could get caught out by pacey attackers, so be mindful of this fact. In Jan Kirchoff, however, you have a solid 3.5 star utility player who can play either at centre-back or defensive midfield.

MidfielderLynden Gooch2320USA£3.5m
MidfielderWahbi Khazri3.53.525Tunisia£10.5m

Sunderland’s midfield gets slightly better in terms of ability, but they do lack some players in this department so an addition or two wouldn’t go amiss. You do start with two players with the ability to reach four-stars, Januzaj and Ndong, though the former is on loan from United and won’t be staying too long. Make the most of Januzaj whilst you can.

This is where the most investment will take place. Perhaps letting Cattermole and Pienaar go to finance some deals would be a good idea. Just be wary that you have a small transfer budget so signing players will be difficult. You don’t want to leave yourself understaffed with too many sales and not enough replacements.

StrikerFabio Borini3.53.525Italy£12m
StrikerJermain Defoe4433England£1.3m
StrikerVictor Anichebe3328Nigeria£4.6m

Luckily, you have Jermain Defoe in the squad or else Sunderland would likely be devoid of goals. None of Watmore, Borini or Anichebe can score goals the way Defoe does but hopefully they can chip in with a few apiece each season. They’re not the sort that can go and grab ten or more goals each year. Once Defoe retires, which is likely to be imminent, you’ll need a new striker to lead the line.
