Infinity Ward Teases Modern Warfare 2 as next Call of Duty Game in 2022

Call of Duty: Vanguard has only been out for a few months. A game set in World War 2, the franchise's fans have gotten the chance to go back in time to battle it out on all four fronts, Western, Eastern, Pacific, and North Africa.

But like any Call of Duty release, it doesn't take long for the next title to be announced or teased.

Here's what we know about the possibility of Modern Warfare 2 and its return as the next Call of Duty game in 2022.

Infinity Ward Teases MW2 as the next Call of Duty

The next installment of the Call of Duty franchise has been teased, thanks to a Tweet made by one of the developers, Infinity Ward.

In the vaguest of terms, the developers just took two lines to give CoD fans a taste of what's coming. In a Tweet by the official Infinity Ward account, "a new generation" of Call of Duty was confirmed to be coming soon, finishing it out with "stay frosty," referencing a line used in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Infinity Ward has been home for some of the franchise's favorite games in many fans' eyes, games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 have all received a lot of love in the past.

The developers already have brought back one of these iconic games, namely Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in the form of just Call of Duty: Modern Warfare back in 2019. This "remake" was received positively by fans as it reunited them with famous characters—although it was a cannoned reboot—and introduced new ones.

As it stands, it was heavily insinuated that a sequel is set to release, with reports saying that it's been codenamed "Project Cortez."

The new game is expected to release in 2022, following adherence to Activision Blizzard's annual release cycle. And although the company was bought by Microsoft for a reported $70 billion, PlayStation fans can rest assured as Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, confirmed on January 20th that the franchise Call of Duty franchise is set to remain on PlayStation per previous agreements.
