Horizon Forbidden West Flying Mounts: How to Call Sunwing & Fly

It's something that's been teased in the trailers, so you may be wondering how to get flying mounts in Horizon Forbidden West.

You'll be introduced to normal mounts, including Chargers, early on, but you'll have to wait to unlock flying ones.

Be wary, there will be some light story spoilers below, so don't read any further if you're concerned about them.

How to Unlock Flying Mounts in Horizon Forbidden West

You'll need to keep playing until you reach the story quest called The Wings of the Ten, which is one of the last few in Horizon Forbidden West.

As part of that quest, you'll be led to a mountain and will be given the chance to override a Sunwing and fly off in it.

This is the earliest you be able to get a flying mount, as it fits into the story heavily. We'll avoid explaining exactly how, so keep playing to this part of Horizon Forbidden West to find out.

How to Override Sunwing & Fly

Once you've crept up to one of the Sunwing machines and held triangle to override it, you can jump on it and fly it around.

Flying is pretty simple and works like mounts on the ground. Hold X to move forward, use the left stick to change direction, and use the right stick to move up and down.

Then, you can hold R2 to slowly descend and land, but it's usually easier to just jump off by pressing square and flying to the ground with your glider.

Calling a Flying Mount

Once you've unlocked the ability to get flying mounts in Horizon Forbidden West, you'll be able to call one to pick you up.

By cycling through your inventory with the left and right d-pad buttons, you'll spot a Sunwing icon in the bottom left of the screen. Then, press down of the d-pad to call the flying mount to where you are.

If the Sunwing icon is red, you'll need to head to a Sunwing location on the map (which is shown by the same icon) and override one again. Once you do, that same Sunwing will come to you whenever you call it.

The Sunwing icon will go red if it's ever killed by another machine or some Rebels, which can happen.
