Behind every great manager is a great assistant.
Sir Alex Ferguson had Mike Phelan, and Jose Mourinho had Rui Faria.
If you are new to the Football Manager series you will need to lean on your assistant, so it is important to know who are the best men to be by your side on the game.
RealSport takes a look at who the best assistant managers are on the game.
Hermann Gerland (CA 174 – PA 174)
Age: 65
Club: Bayern Munich

2001 – managing their reserve team and is currently on his third stint as the
first team assistant. He is currently the Head of Youth Development, working
under interim manager Hans-Dieter Flick.
On FM20, the German has stats of 20 working with youngsters,
20 judging player potential and 18 determination. His wages are £7,000 a week,
but the 65-year-old is considering retirement so it is unlikely you will be
able to bring him on board.
Jesus Perez (CA 170 – PA 170)
Age: 47
Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Country: Spain
Former clubs: Espanyol, Southampton
Best attributes: 19 fitness, 18 motivating, 17 level of

Stats of 19 fitness, 18 motivating and 17 level of
discipline take Perez to a maxed out 170 CA. His wages are £17,500 a week but
with a strong relationship with Pochettino, he is not prepared to move club on
the game.
Rui Faria (CA 170 – PA 170)
Age: 44
Club: Al-Duhail
Country: Portugal
Former clubs: Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid,
Manchester United
Best attributes: 20 level of discipline, 19 fitness, 18
mental
Wage: £5,500 a week
Perhaps the most famous on this list, Rui Faria worked
beneath Jose Mourinho at all of the senior clubs in his career. He did leave
Jose’s staff during their tenure at Manchester United, however, to pursue his
own career as a manger. His first job as a number 1 is with Qatari side
Al-Duhail.
Stats of 20 level of discipline, 19 fitness and 18 mental
give the Portuguese a 170 maximum CA, with his current wages only £5,500 a
week. With him now a manager, there is little chance you can persuade him to
take a number 2 role once again.
Brian Kidd (CA 168 – PA 168)
Age: 70
Club: Manchester City
Country: England
Former clubs: Manchester United, Blackburn, England,
Sheffield United, Portsmouth
Best attributes: 18 judging player potential, 16
defending, 16 mental
Wage: £12,000 a week
A mainstay of the Manchester City backroom staff, Brian Kidd has worked beneath Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and now Pep Guardiola. Long before, Kidd was on the staff at Manchester United, and was the youth teach coach that saw Ryan Giggs come through the club.

Stats of 18 judging player potential, 16 defending and 16 mental
give him a maximum 168 CA, but there is small chance of bringing him to your
club, unless they are ‘an improvement from working for Man City’.
Zeljko Buvac (CA 165 – PA 175)
Age: 57
Club: Unemployed
Country: Bosnia-Herzegovina
Former clubs: Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool
Best attributes: 20 tactical, 19 tactical knowledge, 18
attacking
Wage: n/a
Jurgen Klopp’s long time number 2, having worked together at
Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool – but that ended in 2018. Buvac is yet to
find new work, so is the standout coach to move for in FM20.
Stats of 20 tactical, 19 tactical knowledge and 18 attacking
take his CA to 165, 10 away from his 175 potential. Wages of £20,500 a week
will get you the experienced Bosnian.
Peter Hermann (CA 165 – PA 165)
Age: 67
Club: Unemployed
Country: Germany
Former clubs: Bayer Leverkusen, Nurnberg, Bayern Munich, Schalke,
Hamburg, Fortuna Dusseldorf

On FM, you can snap Hermann up on a contract of £20,500 a
week – giving you his stats of 20 judging player potential, 18 judging player
ability and 17 mental coaching.
Juan Carlos Carcedo (CA 160 – PA 165)
Age: 45
Club: Arsenal
Country: Spain
Former clubs: Valencia, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, PSG
Best attributes: 20 motivating, 19 man management, 16
adaptability
Wage: £25,000 a week
Juan Carlos Carcedo is a long-term member of Unai Emery’s
backroom team, working with his fellow Spaniard at Almeria, Valencia, Spartak
Moscow, Sevilla, PSG and Arsenal. He also lost his job when Emery departed the Gunners,
but both will remain in their positions on FM20 until the February update.
A 160 CA can improve to 165 for the 45-year-old, with Carcedo’s
best stats being 20 motivating, 19 man management and 16 adaptability. It’s
unlikely you will be able to dislodge him from Arsenal however, due to his close
relationship with Emery.
Marco Landucci (CA 158 – PA 170)
Age: 55
Club: Unemployed
Country: Italy
Former clubs: Cagliari, AC Milan, Juventus
Best attributes: 19 mental, 19 determination, 18
motivating

A 158 CA for Landucci can improve to a 170 potential, with the
former goalkeeper expecting wages of £18,500 a week on FM20.
Peter Krawietz (CA 155 – PA 165)
Age: 47
Club: Liverpool
Country: Germany
Former clubs: Mainz, Borussia Dortmund
Best attributes: 18 judging player potential, 16
adaptability, 16 tactical
Wage: £15,000 a week
Another man part of Jurgen Klopp’s dream team, Peter Krawietz
has worked with the Champions League winner since they were at Mainz together.
The 47-year-old has served as Klopp’s number 2 since July 2008, meaning they
have sat in the dugout together for 550 games so far.
Krawietz’s £15,000 a week wages give you 18 judging player
potential, 16 adaptability and 16 tactical – providing a 155 CA. This can rise
to a potential of 165, but given his close relationship with Klopp – a move away
seems unlikely.
German Burgos (CA 155 – PA 155)
Age: 50
Club: Atletico Madrid
Country: Argentina
Former clubs: Racing Club
Best attributes: 18 GK distribution, 18 GK handling, 18
GK shot stopping
Wage: £26,500 a week
Another man who sticks with his manager his German Burgos – the number 2 to Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid. The pair have worked together at Catania and Racing Club, before making the switch to Atletico – meaning they were at three clubs during the course of 2011.

A goalkeeper in his playing days, it’s no surprise to see the 50-year-old Burgos have stats of 19 GK distribution, GK handing and GK shot stopping. His wages are handsome at £26,500 a week, but given his relationship with Simeone a move his out of the question.
