FIFA 18: Free World Cup update confirmed with Cristiano Ronaldo trailer as ICONS return

Get excited. FIFA fans have less than a month to wait for a free 2018 World Cup update to FIFA, featuring all the teams, stadium and kits from Russia.

Rumours circulating over the weekend were confirmed as FIFA 18 released a new trailer surrounding the addition of a World Cup mode to the EA Sports title.

FIFA 18 cover star Cristiano Ronaldo is, of course, the protagonist of the clip which hints on the features that will come with the free update.

Posted by EA SPORTS FIFA on Monday, 30 April 2018

When’s the update released?

The update will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch on May 29, and on mobile on June 6.

What’s happening in Ultimate Team?

FIFA Ultimate Team is the most popular mode of the FIFA franchise, and FUT looks set to mimic what we saw in the FIFA World Cup 2014 game, with players chemistry links based on nationality and confederation.

Receiving a pack in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team for every pack picked up in the World Cup version will also return this summer in a ‘double pack incentive’.

No transfer market will be available however, so players can only be attained through packs, squad building challengers and game modes.

The playable Ultimate Team modes confirmed for the World Cup are: single player & online tournament, single player & online draft and squad building challenges.

Will ICONS return?

The ICONS seen on FIFA 18 Ultimate Team will appear in the World Cup edition, with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho confirmed.

Will there be a Team of the Week?

Although no TOTW has been confirmed for the World Cup update, in FIFA Ultimate Team this season we have seen live Path to Glory or Road to Russia items, and these, or something similar, could be transferred over for the World Cup update with ‘Dynamic Items’.

What game modes are available?

You can pick any of the 32 qualified teams for Russia and embark on the quest to lift the trophy at the 2018 World Cup.

Not only that, you can customise your tournament, and attempt to rewrite history by heading to the World Cup with one of the teams that didn’t qualify. These include Chile, Italy, Netherlands and USA as well as any other FIFA 18 licenced national team.

For those looking to set up a World Cup match quickly, a special kick-off mode will be enable you to use the official players and kits in the authentic stadium atmospheres in the World Cup.

Will there be new squads for the World Cup?

Ratings will be updated for the FIFA World Cup Player Pool, with up-to-date squads from all 32 qualified nations in Russia.
