We're looking ahead to the release of FIFA 24 and what could be in store for those that play the title on the Nintendo Switch.
Switch players have had to deal with a Legacy Edition of the franchise for the last few years, but could that change this time?
Find out all you need to know about FIFA 24 on the Nintendo Switch and what the Legacy Edition is below.
FIFA 24 Nintendo Switch
As one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world, we fully expect FIFA 24 to be released on the Nintendo Switch.
However, FIFA as we know it is getting a shake-up, with EA and FIFA parting ways, and each making their own title.
FIFA will be developing FIFA 24, while EA will be making EA Sports FC 24.
FC 24 will effectively be the next in the series of the FIFA franchise, as EA has developed all previous titles, it is just dropping the FIFA name.
EA Sports FC launched
At long last, EA has revealed its new brand vision, identity and logo for EA Sports FC.
The brand design takes inspiration from the iconic shape of triangles in football. From passing techniques to set plays, the shape is woven into the DNA of football and now EA Sports FC.
The EA Sports FC brand is set to debut in over 100 matches across the biggest leagues in the world in the coming days.
Football fans can get their first look at the new brand in the wild when EA Sports FC partners including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 roll out the FC content.
Release Date
FIFA 24 is not in development yet, with FIFA looking for a new developer to create the game with after the split from EA.
This means there is no FIFA 24 release date yet, although we would expect it to land towards the end of September 2023, as this is when fans are used to getting the new title.
The rival game from EA Sports, titled FC 24, is in development and will likely come at the usual time.
Although nothing is official, we expect an FC 24 release date of Friday, 29 September.
Legacy Edition
Nintendo Switch users could once again only play the Legacy Edition of FIFA 23, which is a heavily reduced version of what you could play on the other platforms.
It was the fourth time Nintendo users have been restricted to this version, meaning the game will have been recycled without much improvement since FIFA 19.
As stated in the official release from EA at the time, "FIFA 23 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay features from FIFA 22 Legacy Edition without any new development or significant enhancements."
"FIFA 23 Legacy Edition will feature an updated visual identity with a newly designed in-game front end and menu screens as well as a commentary refresh."
This included the addition of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League (WSL) and France D1 Arkema (D1F) for the very first time.
We expect that FIFA 24 or FC 24 on Nintendo Switch will also be a Legacy Edition, although we do still hope that EA will treat its loyal Switch fanbase with a decent update!
Game Modes
The following game modes were included in the FIFA 23 Legacy Edition, so we expect to see them in FC 24:
- Kick Off
- Career Mode
- Tournaments – Licensed and Custom, including the UEFA Champions League
- Skill Games
- Online Seasons & Friendlies
- Local Seasons
- FIFA Ultimate Team
- Manager Tasks
- Single Player & Online Seasons, Tournaments and Online Draft
- Online Single Match
- Squad Building Challenges
- FUT Heroes
- ICONS
It should be noted that the FUT Live Content for the Nintendo Switch FIFA 23 Legacy Edition was different from all other consoles.
Supported Play Modes
FIFA 24 and FC 24 on Switch will likely follow suit of FIFA 23, where you could play in TV mode, Tabletop mode, and Handheld mode, with up to 8 players playing at once.
Split Joy-Con Support was also exclusively built for Nintendo Switch, which enables you to compete with your friends anytime and anywhere.
Without any additional hardware, players can separate the Joy-Con controllers and enjoy multiplayer game modes at home, or on the go.
Joy-Con support on the FIFA 23 Legacy Edition included:
- Handheld
- Dual
- Single
The FIFA 23 Legacy Edition also supported Pro Controller configuration, so the same should come in FC 24.
