How To Clean Doc Martens: Step By Step Guide

Dr. Martens, also known as Doc Martens, are a staple in any shoe collection, but knowing how best to clean them isn't always as straightforward as it may seem.

Fortunately, our guide is here to lend a helping hand as we lead you through the cleaning process, adding a few top tips along the way to ensure spotless results.

You may think the technique is just the same as cleaning leather shoes, but Dr. Martens note a few key differences to be aware of to help you keep the leather, and any other materials, in great condition for years to come.

So grab your classic pair of 1460s, or any other Doc Martens for that matter, and follow along with our guide right here.

How To Clean Doc Martens

The following technique is based on Dr. Martens guide to cleaning leather boots. However, we understand that not all Doc Martens are made from the same materials.

Don't worry though as we give our advice on how to clean any alternative materials a little later on.

What You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Cloths
  • Mild Soap
  • Soft-bristled Brush or Old Toothbrush
  • Shoe Polish
  • Shoe Protector

Step 1: Clear a surface and remove the laces from your Doc Martens. We'd suggest leaving the laces to soak in a mixture of warm water and mild soap whilst you continue to clean.

Step 2: Fill a bowl with some warm water then use it to dampen a cloth.

Step 3: Use the cloth to remove any dirt across the uppers. We'd recommend working in circular motions for the best results.

Step 4: Bang the soles of your boots or shoes together, then take a soft-bristled brush, dip it in warm water, and use it to brush away any ingrained mud across the soles.

Top Tip: An old toothbrush can be used if you're struggling to get into all the nooks and crannies.

Step 5: Add a small amount of wax to a sponge and apply generously over your boots or shoes. Dr. Martens recommend picking up its own Wonder Balsam kit for the best results.

Top Tip: Pay close attention to any creases, the tongues, and inside the leather.

Step 6: Once you've applied an even coating, leave to dry for 10 minutes with the laces if you left them to soak.

Step 7: Although optional, we'd recommend applying a protective spray and shoe freshener as a final touch. Check out Dr. Martens Ultra Protector and Shoe Freshener for the official kits.

Step 8: Finish off by relacing your Doc Martens and they should be good to go. Find out how to lace them right here.

What About Other Materials?

You may find that different types of leather are used for different kinds of Doc Martens, some of which require slightly different cleaning methods.

Here are some of our top tips for when you encounter an alternative material to what you're used to.

Patent Leather

Fortunately, Dr. Martens make cleaning its patent leather boots and shoes that bit easier with its own Patent Cleaner spray.

Simply follow the previous steps but rather than applying wax, spray your shoes with the cleaner then wipe away any excess.

Next, take a soft-bristled brush and begin to buff out your boots or shoes to give them a glossy even shine.

Suede

As mentioned in our guide to cleaning suede shoes, suede can be a notoriously tricky material to clean at times.

Once again though, Dr. Martens make things a little easier with its Suede Cleaner spray.

Again, the technique remains the same in that you wipe your boots or shoes down and then spray them with the cleaner.

Once sprayed, scrub gently using a sponge or cloth to clean, then lightly wipe away any excess cleaner using another cloth and some water.

Avoid getting the suede too wet as this will mean they take longer to dry naturally. Once dry, use a suede brush, like this Shacke 4-Way Suede Brush, to lightly sweep along the grain of the suede.

Things To Avoid When Cleaning Doc Martens

The number one rule when it comes to cleaning any shoes or boots is to avoid using a washing machine or tumble dryer.

This is because the excessive amount of water along with the extreme heat can damage the fabric and adhesives, thus causing your sneakers to essentially fall apart.

Dr. Martens also suggest you take this a step further leaving your sneakers to dry naturally. This means you should never apply any direct heat to speed up the process.

Another useful tip is to avoid using any harsh chemicals like bleach. Although they may seem like a quick fix, especially for white shoes or boots, you can end up damaging your shoes if you don't dilute the mixture properly.

Finally, avoid using wired brushes or rough sponges because they can sometimes leave scratches on the surfaces of your shoes or boots.
