How to get Gold in Age of Empires 4

Age of Empires 4 is out now and we strongly believe it's another fantastic instalment in the long-running real-time strategy franchise.

One major aspect of gameplay that's run throughout each game is collecting resources. In AoE 4, Gold is easily the most valuable of the lot but can be tricky to build up a decent supply of.

If you find yourself struggling, we've got some tips to help keep you flush for gold so you can continue to build your armies and work towards victory!

How to Mine Gold in Age of Empires

To mine gold in Age of Empires, you must first find a golden rock on the map. Typically there's one quite close to where you start each game but they can be harder to track down if you're playing at a higher difficulty.

Once you track a gold rock down, you can assign your villagers to mine it for gold. It's good practice to first build a mining camp next to it. This ensures your villagers don't have to walk too far to deposit the gold!

You can also upgrade the mine to increase the gathering speed of your villagers. Each gold rock has a limited amount of resources within, just like with trees and regular rocks. The more villagers you assign to a gold rock, the quicker you'll burn through the resource.

Trade for Gold with Allies!

The other method for obtaining gold in Age of Empires 4 is to trade for it. This can be done once you can build a market. This unlocks in the Feudal age.

Neutral trading posts are scattered around each map (seen central)

Once one is built, you can trade resources that you have great numbers of for another. This means if you have an excess of stone, you can trade it in for gold (at a weighted exchange rate). You can also set up trade routes with allies to exchange resources.

If you're in a match with no allies, you can find neutral trading posts to use instead. These are placed randomly around the map and can be scouted out early on.
