FIFA 22 is set to be the best edition of the title in a long time with more emphasis placed on the game since the introduction of next-gen consoles.
Lionel Messi led FIFA 21 with a 93 OVR, but he could be under threat this season with some great players in contention.

Latest news - Attack like the pros
The latest in the FIFA101 series is available now as RealSport caught up with ePL star Diogo Mendes who discussed the best way to attack in Ultimate Team.
Check out his tips and advice to help you dominate FUT Champs this weekend.
We don’t know when we will see our first glimpse of the new game, but news on the FIFA 22 release date should arrive in the coming weeks.
We are expecting the new game to become available in late September, assuming there are no delays like we saw for FIFA 21.
Lionel Messi was the highest-rated player at the beginning of Ultimate Team with his basic card 93 OVR, closely followed by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Pele’s Icon moments card currently has the highest rating of all the cards as the only player with a 99 OVR, although with Team of the Season (TOTS) to come that could change.
Of the current generation of players, Messi and Ronaldo are joined by Robert Lewandowski with a 98-rated Team of the Year (TOTY) card.
We expect more of the same next year, but we may see some changes among the top players on the game.
The ratings change more frequently on Career Mode with regular updates, but they will generally start with the same as Ultimate Team.
We are more interested in the player potential though, and we think goal machines Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland will boast the best on FIFA 22 Career Mode.
Mbappe boasts a 95 potential on FIFA 21 Career Mode, with Haaland’s slightly lower on 93. This gap will be bridged on FIFA 22 if the Norwegian continues his goal scoring exploits.
As far as FIFA 22 wonderkids go, you can’t look much further than Barcelona teenagers Pedri and Ansu Fati for the stars of the future.
Take a look at who we think will be the top-rated players on FIFA 22.
Lionel Messi (OVR 93)
Surely Messi won’t receive another downgrade on FIFA 22.
Having dropped from 94 to 93 this season, we think Messi will remain the top player on the game as he is producing more than one goal involvement per game.
Cristiano Ronaldo (OVR 92)
Cristiano Ronaldo has been in fine goal scoring form in Serie A this season, so we can’t see his ratings going down.
A 92 OVR seems fair for a Ronaldo who is not quite at the peak of his powers, but still better than almost everybody else.
Robert Lewandowski (OVR 92)
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski deserves recognition for his outrageous goal record by being ranked alongside Messi and Ronaldo.
Lewandowski is arguably the best player in the world right now and that should be recognised on FIFA 22.
