FIFA 22 Rangers Career Mode Guide: Starting lineup and who to sign

Rangers finally reclaimed the Scottish title last season from bitter rivals Celtic, but now it is time to retain their crown in FIFA 22.

Steven Gerrard has left his post to take charge at Aston Villa, so a new manager is needed, but have you got what it takes to keep Rangers at the top in Career Mode?

Rangers’ blend of youth and experience means you have a strong squad, and with the help of our guide you can dominate Scottish football for years to come.

Team Rating

Rangers has a 3.5-star rating in FIFA 22.

The breakdown of the ratings is as follows: ATT 74, MID 74, DEF 75.

Starting Lineup and Formation

Rangers’ default 4-3-2-1 formation is a strong one and can be easily altered if you prefer your attackers to play with more width.

Veteran 39-year-old goalkeeper Allan McGregor (OVR 75) is your number one, although he probably has just one season left in him.

Star player and captain James Tavernier (OVR 77) must play right-back, with Croatian defender Borna Barisic (OVR 75) on the opposite flank at left-back.

Connor Goldson (OVR 76) will be your first-choice centre-back, and we would go for Filip Helander (OVR 74) alongside him as he has a higher potential than Leon Balogun.

In your midfield three, we would opt for Ryan Jack (OVR 75) to play at the base of the trio as a more defensive option.

Either side of Jack, we like the mobility and work rates of Joe Aribo (OVR 73) and Glen Kamara (OVR 75) as both players get forward well.

Leading the line will be hot-headed Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos (OVR 76), but hopefully, you can curb his 89 Aggression!

His supporting acts are two of your most promising young players in Ryan Kent (OVR 76) and Ianis Hagi (OVR 74) who offer pace and creativity in behind.

Tactics and Instructions

In the default tactics, both full-backs are set to ‘Join the Attack’ and ‘Overlap’. This is perfect to get the best from them in an attacking sense but does mean you need your midfield to cover.

We would definitely instruct Ryan Jack to ‘Stay Back While Attacking’, and possibly even ‘Drop Between Defenders’ to ensure there is cover when your full-backs fly forward.

As the most creative of the midfielders, Joe Aribo can be left to ‘Free Roam’ and get on the ball as much as possible to cause problems for the opposition defence.

All three of your forwards are mobile enough to run in behind so you won’t want to limit just one player, so we would leave the attacking runs balanced.

We would tell Alfredo Morelos to ‘Stay Central’ and occupy the central defenders with is pace and physicality.

Development Plans

Rangers have several youngsters with potential above 75 OVR, so make sure to check their development plans and get them working on what YOU want them to be good at.

19-year-old right-back Nathan Patterson (POT 80) is one to keep an eye on as he has the quality to become your starting RB for years to come.

As far as position changes go, Brandon Barker (OVR 67) is the only one we would look at.

Usually, we would say add him to the transfer list, but his blistering pace can make him effective off the bench, so switch him to a position you will use (CF).

Transfer Market

Starting budget: £8 million

Who should go?

There is a large squad at your disposal, so make sure to bring in as much money as you can to help fund your transfers.

Canadian centre-midfielder Scott Arfield (OVR 72) can be let go, with both Steven Davis and John Lundstram ahead of him in the pecking order.

There are several players set to retire such as Jermain Defoe (OVR 68) so it won’t be easy to sell them, and you would have to wait for an offer to come in instead of transfer listing them.

The following youngsters can also be let go as their potential in FIFA 22 Career Mode is not high enough to become a first-team player at Rangers:

Scott Wright (OVR 67), Robby McCrorie (OVR 63), Stephen Kelly (OVR 61)

In total, these sales should add around £4 million to your budget.

Loans

There are two players we think are worth sending out on loan as you are heavily stocked in the central midfield department.

Both Juninho Bacuna (POT 77) and Nnamdi Ofoborh (POT 77) can become first-team players but will struggle for regular game time in the first season.

Full-backs Nathan Patterson (POT 80) and Calvin Bassey (POT 79) can also be first-team stars in the future, and we would keep them in the squad as your backup options.

Rangers have four players out on loan already, and all four of them have the potential to reach 76 OVR or higher.

This means they are worth keeping, so make sure to monitor the progress of Ben Williamson (POT 76), Josh McPake (POT 76), Cedric Itten (POT 77), and Glenn Middleton (POT 77).

Who to sign?

While Allan McGregor will do the job in your first season, you will need to sign a goalkeeper for the future.

Fortunately, whoever you sign will have a season to progress to the level you need for a starting spot, so signing a cheap young talent is our first priority.

KRC Genk teenager Maarten Vandevoordt (OVR 70) is our first choice as he has the highest potential and won’t break the bank either!

Young Portsmouth GK Gavin Bazunu (OVR 65) is also an excellent option and the cheapest on our shortlist.

Transfer Options (GK)

Your budget is not going to stretch to making marquee signings, so we are continuing to sign for the future.

We think centre-back is an area where Rangers are currently weakest, so want to bring in a young CB with high potential to dominate in future years.

The Bundesliga has some great options, with Armel Bella Kotchap (OVR 71) our favourite for his 85 Strength and 85 Potential.

The cheapest option is Borussia Dortmund teenager Nnamdi Collins (OVR 60) who you could sign for less than £1 million, but his potential makes that an absolute bargain.

Board Expectations

There is minimal pressure on your Continental Success and Financial targets, so go and enjoy a European adventure and don’t worry about the bills!

Youth Development is also not high on the board’s list of priorities, but it can’t hurt to invest a little time and money into developing your club’s talent.

Domestic Success is where your popularity with the board lies. Critical to your tenure, bringing home the Scottish title and cup are paramount to your success as boss.

The board is also keen for you to grow the club off the field as they see Brand Exposure as a high priority, so make sure to keep them happy with shirt sales!
