Following the release of the PlayStation 5 and the innovative DualSense controller, Sony is once again pushing the boundaries of the current technology to bring us a next-generation virtual reality experience. There are some key details missing, but here's everything we know about the PSVR2 and what Sony has planned for the PS5's Virtual Reality headset.
LATEST - New PSVR2 details emerge
Earlier this week, Sony held a private conference with developers to discuss the technological advancements coming to the new Virtual Reality headset they're developing - commonly known and referred to as PSVR2.
First things first, it sounds like Sony is actually referring to the headset as NGVR - Next-Gen Virtual Reality - over PSVR2. We don't think either name is going to stick, but they both mean the same thing really.
The PSVR2, or NGVR, is going to feature an HDR OLED display with a FOV of 110 degrees. This is ten more than the original PSVR headset. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it is a huge advancement.
Rather than coming with PlayStation Move controllers separately, the PSVR2 headset is going to come packaged with the PSVR2 controllers. This means it's going to cost a lot more, but it's for good reason. The new handsets are going to feature haptic rumble feedback, adaptive triggers, and touch sensors. Everything a DualSense does, but in a virtual reality controller!
When does the PSVR 2 come out?
At the moment, this is anyone's guess. We have no idea when the PSVR2 will actually release. All we know, so far, is that Sony should reveal more launch details about the next generation of PSVR in early 2022.
To the common gamer, this would suggest sometime before March 2022. However, these things never go to plan and "early 2022" could stretch as far as anywhen in the first half of the year.
We would like to see PSVR2 launch before 2023, but we're not confident of that. The original PSVR headset launched on October 13th, 2016, following the release of the PS4 on November 15th, 2013. There are almost three years in there, so we're expecting something similar, if not longer, this time around.
