NHL 19: Ottawa Senators Player Ratings, Roster & Top Prospects

The Ottawa Senators are in full nose-dive mode, with all five of their top scorers from 2017/18 expected to leave the club by this trade deadline, or have already left. It’s all about building a new, young, and exciting team for the Senators now, which can be one of the most exciting ways to play Franchise Mode on NHL 19. 

Mark Stone, Right Wing, 87 OVR

With Erik Karlsson gone, Mark Stone is the de facto star of the show in Ottawa, boasting tremendous physicality and a keen eye for goal. Last season, in 13 fewer games, he tied with Karlsson as the points leader of the Senators at 62 points in 58 games. From the right wing, he continues as Ottawa’s leading skater this season, but with an expiring contract this summer, he’s expected to be sold for some strong returns.

The Ottawa Senators weren’t expected to do very much this season, merely showcasing their impending UFAs for the trade deadline to get some more draft picks in the bank. But, there has been a shining light, with Thomas Chabot breaking through with 39 points in 41 games with a +1 rating – impressive for a 21-year-old averaging nearly 24 minutes per game for one of the worst teams in the NHL. 

Craig Anderson, Goaltender, 83 OVR

Craig Anderson was set for a very heavy workload this season, starting 31 of the first 36 games of the season. Then, the 37-year-old American suffered an injury, bringing Anders Nilsson into the crease. Despite Nilsson posting a far superior goals against average to Anderson’s 3.56, the regular starter has since earned back the net. Last season, also on a weak Senators team, Anderson notched a .898 save percentage and 3.32 goals against average, warranting his fairly lowly 83 overall rating in NHL 19.

From the Day 1, September 13 update, this is how the Ottawa Senators first lines start. Matt Duchene is one of the fastest players on the game, and Bobby Ryan still boasts strong shooting attributes, both of which couple nicely with Mark Stone’s all-around strong play and Thomas Chabot’s playmaking ability.

Colin White, Center, 77 OVR

In 2018/19, Colin White became a fully-fledged Senator, scoring 11 goals and 26 points in 44 games. On NHL 19, White is already a well-rounded forward, boasting decent stats across the board. With decent potential, plenty of game time alongside good players should help White’s overall jump into the mid-80s over the coming seasons.

The problem for the Ottawa Senators is that their need to enter a full rebuild has come so soon after a trip to the 2017 Conference Finals, prior to which they made it to the playoffs in three of the last five seasons. So, the prospect pool is pretty shallow and relatively old, with its two youngest players already 19-years-old. There a few names to keep an eye on, though, including Alex Formenton, Drake Batherson, and goaltender Filip Gustavsson. Players looking to take on the Senators should look to bolster their prospect pool greatly and as soon as possible, with defensemen being of particular focus.
