A new entry in the NBA 2K franchise is finally here! NBA 2K27 was released a little over a month before the start of the NBA 2027 season, one of the most anticipated seasons of the past decade.
I can't say NBA 2K27 garnered the same anticipation from the basketball community, but there was still buzz surrounding the title and its new features.
The question fans have about NBA 2K27 is the one they do for every single sports game released in this day and age. Is this just another yearly update, or are the improvements actually worth my money?
When it comes to NBA 2K27, the answer to that question is, well, complicated.

Presentation Continues to Deliver, But Cracks Are Starting to Show
Presentation has always been one of the strong points of NBA 2K titles, and that remains the case in NBA 2K27.
Crowd reactions are great and authentic to arenas and fan bases' traditions. Commentary is good, and it doesn't get as repetitive and dull as in other sports franchises such as Madden or College Football.
I also didn't experience any moments where the commentators made wrong analyses or completely misjudged the importance of a play, which is something that regularly happened in NHL 27.
In this regard, NBA 2K continues to be ahead of the industry, but not so much that it can allow itself to just coast by.
Some presentation elements are starting to feel dull, as they haven't been changed, at least not significantly, in the past three or so years.
Presentation elements such as team entrances, half-time shows, and time-out cutscenes need a refresh. They aren't bad by any means, but they are starting to look and feel repetitive.
All that said, presentation is still a strong point of NBA 2K27, but if left virtually untouched for one more year, that can certainly change.
The Holy Grail of Sports Gameplay
NBA 2K27 gameplay is great. It's not perfect, and you can argue the changes from last year's to this one don't justify the full price, but gameplay continues to be stellar.
AI reacts quicker and smarter to plays; defenders do a better job at closing out on opponents, and players are more aware of their skill sets, aka, Rudy Gobert isn't shooting threes every time he's open.
The brand-new Hands-Up and Shot Contest features give defensive players more tools to guard opponents, especially in the paint.
Defensive contests now impact the outcome of shots much more than before, which makes defense feel a lot more rewarding.
On the other hand, dribble moves are easier to execute due to the new Movement Packages, giving players an even bigger bag to draw from.
The dunk meter added some much-needed skill gap to the feature. The days of just running full speed towards the basket and dunking by simply pressing a button and watching the animation unfold are gone, and thank goodness for it.
You still face a few connection problems in online play, mainly in The Park or The REC, but apart from that, the game plays genuinely well.
If you are someone who plays mostly offline, on MyCareer, MyNBA, or even Play Now, then you will love the gameplay. It's fun, immersive, but also challenging.
Again, it's not perfect, but in my opinion, it's the best gameplay of any sports game on the market, and only College Football 27 can truly rival it.
Same Old? Same Old.
The MyCareer story is okay at best, and if you have played the mode in the past five years, you have played a slightly different version of it.
That's one of the downsides of MyCareer narratives; there isn't a lot that changes from year to year, and it feels like the same old story with just a few tweaks to the main character and the supporting cast.
It has enough changes to make it look new, but not enough for it to actually deliver a unique and immersive experience.
I wouldn't blame you for just skipping the prologue and going straight into the draft; at least we have the option to do so, which is a positive point.
A good number of players only play MyCareer to level up their character before going to The City.
If you're part of the percentage of players who actually play MyCareer for its offline and story appeal, then you can expect to experience much of the same as you did in NBA 2K26.
You do have the option to play with a friend, but that friend will be controlling an AI player, not his own character, earning no upgrades for his badges.
This makes the MyCareer co-op option feel incredibly unappealing. Why would I want to play Robin instead of Batman? Furthermore, why would I want to do that, using a character that isn't mine?
Playing with your friends is great; having the option to play MyCareer with a friend and create hundreds of different storylines and scenarios from it would be amazing.
Unfortunately, that's not what happens in NBA 2K27. There is no incentive for you to waste time playing with an AI character instead of leveling up your MyPlayer.
Just grind offline and go to The City if you want to have fun with your friends. You can play with them, level up your character, and still have plenty of fun.
The City and MyTeam Bond
The City and MyTeam still share the strong bond of microtransactions. Both modes are designed to incentivize you to spend as much money on the game as possible: one to improve your team, the other to level up your MyPlayer.
The experience is the same as it has been in the past decade. You want to be competitive in The Park, get your wallet out, because almost everyone else does. If you refuse, you will be at a huge disadvantage, as earning VC is painfully slow otherwise.
On MyCasino, sorry, MyTeam, the formula is the same, but it's done to improve your lineup. Promo cards are released weekly, and if you don't acquire them, you will be behind the curve.
The City and MyTeam experience amounts to that. Yes, it's still possible to have fun in both modes as a "free-to-play" user, but that's capped.
Don't go into NBA 2K27 expecting The City and MyTeam to deliver a significantly different experience, as you will be massively disappointed if you do so.
The Good, The Great, The Afterthought
MyNBA was one of the best game modes in sports games, and the addition of MyNBA Legacy took it to a whole other level.
You can now control the career of a current NBA player, with the option to start with his current or his rookie version. As you play, you achieve milestones that allow you to unlock badges and upgrade your attributes.
But what makes MyNBA Legacy unique is that you can completely change the career trajectory of your favorite NBA player or one of the many what-if players in the league.
The MyNBA Eras is your personal playground. You have the tools to redefine history, creating new big-threes or preventing some from ever existing, changing league rules, making franchise-altering trades, and much more.
Every Era feels unique, and a lot of that is because of the presentation, which is amazing, especially in early Eras. There aren't a lot of modes that allow you to change the past, let alone alter key moments of your sports history.
MyNBA Eras does so and continues to set the standard for what a great offline sports mode feels like.
Unfortunately, there is one mode in NBA 2K27 that continues to feel like an afterthought. I'm talking about The W, which, no matter what new features it receives, looks and feels soulless.
I've said this for years about The W, and it continues to ring true: The W is a cheap version of MyCareer and offers players little to no reason to play it.
Even with female MyPLAYERs' integration in The City, which wasn't exactly done flawlessly, The W storyline continues to be dull.
It's not on par with the MyCareer story, which is okay at best. That, on its own, puts players away from the mode, and the lackluster in-game presentation also doesn't help.
The WNBA is the most popular it has ever been, and year after year 2K misses an opportunity to capitalize on that and actually deliver an exciting The W mode.
In a year where Caitlin Clark features on the Deluxe Edition cover, I was expecting much more from The W.
