Warner Bros. Games Announce Mortal Kombat: Onslaught
The new game's announcement coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat franchise and will be the first collection RPG in the franchise, providing a "mobile-exclusive cinematic story" that will see players build a team of fighters from a vast roster of characters to stop a dark and dangerous threat that's wreaking havoc across the different realms.
The first mobile game in the franchise since the aptly named Mortal Kombat Mobile, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be an interesting change of pace for a series that has been fairly consistent in its identity over the last 30 years.
According to NeverRealm's Chief Creative Officer Ed Boon, the studio is using Mortal Kombat: Onslaught to push "the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways..." but does say that the game is "staying true" to the IP's "core visceral nature". They aim to do this by having "fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy".
President of Warner Bros. Games David Haddad, meanwhile, claimed that "Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a testament to why Mortal Kombat has been a top gaming franchise for over 30 years" while praising NerveRealm's team for continuing their innovation in gameplay.
As of writing, not much more is known about Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, with the only real glimpse of the game being in some key art displaying popular characters from the franchise's history.
