The first of many Football Manager 27 deep dives has finally been released, and it addresses the most scrutinised feature of FM 26, the User Interface.
Starting with the User Interface deep dive makes sense, as that's the feature players are expecting to undergo the most changes, since the FM 26 UI was everything but consensual.
A UI That Looks to the Past To Prepare the Future
The FM 27 UI changes aim to make navigation more intuitive, easier, faster, and also provide more customizable options to players.
There are a lot of good quality-of-life improvements here, such as fewer pop-ups, more full windows, and clearer information distribution in both the main and secondary menus.
From what was showcased, it's now much easier to identify the area of the game you want to access, and it takes fewer clicks to do so.
This was one of the biggest problems in FM 26, as you had to go through an ocean of options to find the tab you actually wanted to access.
The worst part is that, more ofthen that not, the data you wanted was inside a pop-up window of a pop-up window. It wasn't intuitive and made the menu exhausting to navigate, especially at launch.
The main sections of the game menu were updated, which is an okay change and ties into the clearer information distribution I mentioned above.
Being able to access the training or squad section with a simple click is great, but we already had that in FM 24. So, while these are definitely improvements, I'm not going to pretend these are groundbreaking changes, because they aren't.
The messages tab also underwent some improvements. Messages are now color-coded to help you identify the ones to prioritize, and they include more information.
You can also take actions from the message itself, for transfer or loan offers, for example, instead of having to access another tile.
The addition of dynamic scaling resolution is perhaps the best addition to the FM 27 UI. The player's interface will now automatically adapt to their preferred resolution, with three scaling models of information display to choose from.
Customization options were also introduced: players can now change some of the main menu tiles, text descriptions were added to the bookmark bar, shortcuts can be edited at will, and users can now choose where they are directed when they click on one of the main menu navigation options.
The changes announced look promising on paper and will definitely make the UI interface easier and more intuitive to navigate.
However, most people in the community aren't really convinced by these changes, with most pointing to the fact that the UI still doesn't look as good as the FM 24 one.
This is something Sports Interactive will have to learn to live with, as until they deliver an FM title with a UI as acclaimed as the FM 24 one, the comparisons will continue.
I think these changes are definitely a step in the wrong direction, as while the FM 27 UI doesn't look perfect, it looks much easier to navigate than the FM 26 one, and that in itself is a huge win.
Sports Interactive will never fully revert to the FM 24 UI, and I think long-term that could be a great decision. But for that to be the case, substantial improvements will need to be made in the next two titles.
