Whether you are a FIFA novice or a competitive gamer striving for that extra 1% to take your game to the next level, Tom Sorrell has shared his tactics and formations advice for FIFA 22.
The 22-year-old was recently crowned champion of the Guild FIFA 22 Cup, claiming the ‘Golden Sub’ trophy presented by Subway.
An amateur FIFA player, Sorrell’s tips can help take your Ultimate Team game to new heights as he looks to make the step into professional gaming.
Guild FIFA 22 Cup Champion
Saturday, 4 December was no ordinary day for Tom Sorrell as he made huge strides towards his goal of becoming a FIFA professional and lifting the ‘Golden Sub’ trophy at the Odeon Luxe West End.
The trophy, designed by Hatton Garden-based mystery master-craftsman, Johnny Hoxton, was not all he took home though as he also left with his share of the £1,800 prize pool.
The event featured the who’s who of the Esports and Gaming world, featuring some of the world’s top creators hosting the championship, including Pieface, Elz the Witch, Stevie White, TN25 and Iain Chambers.
The grand final was opened with a message from Guild co-owner David Beckham and the show also featured a unique show match between superstar FIFA creator Pieface, and renowned entertainer & social media personality Harry Pinero, with Pieface coming out on top.
“What an amazing experience to compete in front of so many people for the first time, and for Subway to provide such a delicious looking trophy,” said Sorrell after winning the final.
“Hopefully, this is only the start of my FIFA Esports career!”
Turning pro
While winning the Guild FIFA 22 Cup is a huge achievement for Sorrell, it could be just the start of his journey into the professional esports world.
“It is a great honour to win the first tournament hosted by Guild Esports and Subway,” he said.
“Guild Esports and Subway did a great job of drumming up the atmosphere and the whole day allowed us to experience what it's really like to be a professional FIFA player.
“The trophy is one of a kind too - I currently have a massive Golden footlong sandwich in my front room!”
Sorrell now has a taste of what the professional FIFA scene is like, and he will use it to fuel his ambitions.
“I want to keep winning tournaments and hopefully make it to a professional level,” said Sorrell.
“I have actually already entered Guild Esports’ next tournament - the FIFA Guild Academy Challenge.
“There was a great standard at the Guild FIFA 22 Cup and experiencing a day in the life of a professional player has fueled my determination for even more.
“It was also great to talk to the likes of PieFace and TN25, who now have professional careers in gaming and FIFA, and hear about their experience in reaching the level they’re at.
“I spoke to a few staff members at Guild Esports too, which allowed me to get an insight into how a professional organisation works. It's amazing how far the game has come and to have been involved with such a successful live FIFA event and mix with the inspiring hosts was really special.”
Strike partnerships are essential
Anyone who plays FIFA will know how important it is to strike a balance between attack and defence and find a system that suits your playing style.
Guild FIFA 22 Cup champion Sorrell is a strong believer in a balanced side, with two classic formations as his favourites in this season’s game.
“My preferred formation is 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 as I feel it's the most balanced,” he explains.
“Having two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation makes it much easier to create chances due to having more options in attack.
“I like to have both strikers running off the defence and feeding them with through balls.
“Using this strategy has been very effective for me this year which is why the formation is my favourite.”
A system like this will require pacey strikers, which is lucky as that is all anyone has ever used in FIFA Ultimate Team!
Joga Bonito
We all know that skill moves can make the difference in FIFA 22 to create an extra yard of space for a clean shot.
Sorrell is no stranger to a bit of Brazilian flair either, with several skill moves in his armoury.
“Elastico/Reverse elastico as they're the best skill moves to beat defenders and I love it when a move comes off,” said Sorrell when discussing his favourite skill moves to use in FIFA 22.
“Shot cancel is also great when creating space for a shot on goal.
“As well as this, I really like ball roll scoop down when I want to change direction quickly and get away from my opponent.”
If you can master these moves, you will create loads more chances, so you best make sure your finishing is on point!
Super signings
Every year there are ‘meta’ players in FIFA Ultimate Team, and this year is no different with several ‘must-have’ players in the game.
Ligue 1 is a hotbed for FUT fan favourites, with the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder one of the most popular players in FIFA 21.
Sorrell has picked out three Ligue 1 stars that are incredible this season, and you can’t argue with his selection!
“Neymar and Mbappe as they can do everything from passing, dribbling, shooting,” he said when picking his must-have players for FIFA 22 Ultimate Team.
“However, I would say a must-have would be the Renato Sanches signature signings card. He is definitely the best centre mid.
“He is very good defensively and going forward - the perfect box to box midfielder.”
Well there you have it, get Renato Sanches in your team now folks!
