FIFA 22 is building plenty of anticipation as this year's release date approaches, but the latest big news is that the series will have its first female English-speaking commentator!
EA Sports announced today that Alex Scott will be joining the commentary team for FIFA 22, and it's an historic addition.
FIFA 22: Alex Scott becomes series' first female English-speaking commentator
EA Sports revealed today that former England international and Arsenal right-back Alex Scott will be a featured Goal Commentator in FIFA 22!
“This is a big moment for FIFA, for football and women and girls across the world,” said Alex Scott. “Representation is crucial and the inclusion of an English-speaking female commentator on FIFA is game-changing."
While Scott is the first woman in this role, it's worth stressing she's also the first Black woman, and this is a great step by EA Sports to push back against some of the misogynoir we've seen over the years from certain parts of the football fanbase.
Who is Alex Scott and why is she in FIFA 22?
At just 36 years old, Alex Scott is nothing short of a women's football legend for England, with a career that spanned from her youth days with Arsenal in 1992 all the way to her retirement in 2017.
She played the majority of her professional career with Arsenal, though also spent a few years with Birmingham City and a few with the Boston Breakers.
Alex Scott competed with the England national team 140 different times, which included her representing Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics.
In one of her biggest career moments, Scott scored Arsenal's winning goal in the 2007 UEFA Women's Cup Final to give them the win over Umea of Sweden.
Alex Scott has competed competed four times in the UEFA Women's Championship and three times in the FIFA Women's World Cup, winning silver at the 2009 UEFA Women's Euros and bronze at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Scott actually kicked off her media career in 2016 with appearances on Soccer AM and with BBC Sport, BT Sports, and Sky Sports, even later winning Bear Grylls' ITV show Mission Survive in 2016.
Scott has been a full-time television broadcaster and widely respected football pundit since her retirement from competition in 2017, and she was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
This is just the next step for her incredible career, but it's a major move forward for EA Sports and FIFA 22.
