Roles in FC 27 remain the same as they did last year. A few continue to dominate all meta tactics and are crucial if you want to consistently win matches.
There are plenty of possibilities in terms of game plan, but you can't really be very expressive with them in competitive modes. Of course, this doesn't mean you'll have to stick with the boring meta. It'll just cost you a couple of games or more.

Best Roles for All Positions in FC 27
Even though the meta continues to change, Roles remain relatively stable for most positions. We have listed the current best roles, but even with the changing meta, they should be reliable.
Goalkeeper
Unlike outfield players, Roles do not dictate much performance for goalkeepers. A safe choice is Goalkeeper at Defend.
You can try Sweeper Keeper if you want them to be aggressive. Keep the Role on Balanced.
Center Back
For a CB, their job is always to defend. So, Defender set on Defend is the best Role for the position.
Unlike real football, the game isn't super dynamic. If your CB leaves space to get involved in the play, you'll absolutely be punished, as your other players won't be covering the space very well.
All meta formations also have CAMs and tend to play narrow, which doubles the need for you to retain a shape and have central defenders just defending.
Fullbacks
The best Role for both LB and RB is Fullback on Defend. You can switch from Defend to Balanced if you prefer a bit more flexibility.
Other Roles aren't really worth looking at unless you want to play non-meta tactics for fun. A fullback has to stay in his position, as drifting even a bit will give the winger an easy space to run into.
Central Defending Midfielder
Deep-Lying Playmaker on Defend or Holding on Defend are the two best Roles for CDMs in FC 27. They generally have to both help in build-up and defend. Higher focus should be on defending, however.
Cutting lanes and denying the opposition chances to progress the ball forward are the main objectives. Likewise, when you win possession deep into your half, CDMs will be the first to really launch the counterattack.
A Deep-Lying Playmaker balances those duties well. If you feel your attackers are getting isolated and there is a big space between the CDM and the forwards, set defensive mids to roaming.
Central Midfielder
Box-to-Box on Balanced is the best Role for a CM. A great competitive tactic is based on creating a disciplined shape where every player occupies and holds their position.
The role allows CMs to control the middle of the pitch. During attacks, they can provide passing options. In defence, they can maintain their line to make it hard to break into the final third.
Central Attacking Midfielder
Shadow Striker is the best Role for CAM. They can be playmakers too, especially if there are already two strikers ahead.
However, if you're playing with wingers or narrow formations, you'd need to have decent players up front.
In formations with multiple strikers, wingers that play in an Inside Forward role, and in case there is a big area left between defensive mids and attackers that leaves few passing opportunities, you can set CAMs to Playmaker.
Wingers
Inside Forward on Balance is the best Role for wingers in the game. They're also one of your main goal scorers. The front three should always provide assisting opportunities for the midfield.
The more players you can get in the opposition penalty box, the better your chances of scoring. Inside Forward also doesn't make the winger any less effective at their traditional role of running down the wing.
Crossing is much improved this year, so a traditional winger that can hoof the ball is good too. But that can be done even as an Inside Forward.
Strikers
There are multiple good Roles for strikers in FC 27. Advanced Forward set on Attack remains the best pick because it is versatile enough to have strikers more involved without forgetting their most important responsibility: scoring goals.
In a formation of multiple strikers, you can put one in a more supportive Role as a False 9. Poacher is another good role if your tactic requires a striker to be purely a goal-scoring threat.
For every position, it's best to have players with Roles++. You can easily give them that through Evolutions. All Roles++ are available for 7.5K Coins or 150 FC Points. So, virtually everyone on your team won't have to worry about getting them.
