Putting together a list of the best Manchester United kits of all time isn't as straightforward as it may seem given the reputation of the club. However, we've decided to pull together a selection of our favourites based on their designs and any success the team had during each season the kit was active.

Being one of the most successful teams in England though, the selection of great kits is almost endless. Moreover, with the addition of the 2023/24 home and away strips, which we feel are some of the best football kits for the season, the selection process becomes even trickier.

However, there is a collection of kits that we think stand out from the rest due to the various accolades they were a part of as well as the iconic teams that wore them.

So, from modern designs, like this 2021/22 away kit, to some of the best Premier League kits from the past, like this 1993/94 third strip, we've rounded up the best from United right here to help you build out your football shirt collection. Let's get into it...

1. Umbro Home Kit 1992/93

Best Manchester United kit of all time

The 1992/93 season was the first in the Premier League era of English football and, in honour of the occasion, Umbro released this incredible home kit that saw the return of the lace-up style from the club's former life as Newton Heath.

The jersey was clearly a good luck charm as Manchester United picked up the inaugural Premier League trophy, which was the first time the club had won a league title in 26 years.

This was, in part, due to the incredible defensive efforts of Gary Pallister and Dennis Irwin, with Peter Schmeichel just behind, who only conceded 31 times over the course of the season, the best of any team during the 1992/93 campaign.

All in all, we feel this iconic 1992/93 Umbro kit is one of the best Manchester United strips of all time thanks to its classic design and the amazing achievements it was a part of.

2. adidas Away Kit 2021/22

Best modern Manchester United kit

If you're after something from the current era of football though, we feel it's hard to look past this 2021/22 away strip.

While the kit is modern, the design is actually based on some of the club's early '90s shirts, many of which featured a similar white and light blue colour scheme.

Despite the kit's lack of success under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ralf Rangnick, we believe it still deserves attention due to its retro-patterned design alone. What's more, the shirt was worn by a number of huge names in the world of football including Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba, and the returning Cristiano Ronaldo.

3. Nike Home Kit 2007/08

Best Manchester United home kit

On the topic of Cristiano Ronaldo, the 2007/08 Premier League season was one of Manchester United's best-ever seasons thanks to his incredible goal-scoring record across all competitions.

The team picked up both the Champions League and Premier League trophies, with Ronaldo subsequently winning the 2008 Ballon d'Or as a result.

In terms of the kit's design, Nike kept things simple by combining a plain red shirt with white shorts and socks to stand out on the pitch. However, we feel the simplicity is what makes this jersey so great and, ultimately, one of the best home kits Manchester United has ever had.

4. Umbro Away Kit 1998/99

Best Manchester United away kit

On the away side, the 1998/99 Umbro away kit is considered one of the best in football history. It has a white base and red and black stripes across the centre, matching the details on the collar and sleeves.

The kit was worn during Manchester United's Champions League and Premier League-winning campaigns, aided by the goal-scoring prowess of record-signing Dwight Yorke.

This away jersey is considered a huge success for the club, thanks to its combination of style and success. It has stood the test of time and remains a fan favourite to this day.

The kit's unique design and championship-winning pedigree make it a standout in Manchester United's rich history of football kits, hence why the 23/24 third kit isn't too dissimilar to this iconic strip.

5. Umbro Third Kit 1992/93

Best retro Manchester United kit

During the 1992/93 season, Umbro also released this stunning third-choice strip worn by the likes of Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes during Manchester United's title-winning campaign.

The kit is based on the half-and-half green and yellow strip the club wore as Newton Heath before transitioning into Manchester United in 1902.

Continuing the vintage look, Umbro also included the same lace-up style collar as the home shirt. As a result, we feel this Manchester United third strip is, not just one of the best kits in the club's history, but perhaps even one of the best retro football kits of all time.
