NHL 22: Hockey Ultimate Team Beginner's Guide & Tips
Like Ultimate Team modes in other games, HUT 22 is centralized on collecting cards of past and present players to create a dream squad.
You'll have to work through a series of different game modes and various challenges in NHL 22 Ultimate Team to work towards earning more cards.
You'll earn HUT Coins and NHL Points in a variety of ways, which will eventually be used to purchase new cards in the Auction House or new Packs which you can open in hopes of pulling an amazing card.
HUT 22 Game Modes: Online & Offline
There are many different ways to play in NHL 22 Ultimate Team, but the biggest difference is whether you'll find yourself playing offline or online.
Offline modes pit you against the CPU at varying difficulties while online modes will find you facing off against another NHL 22 player.
HUT Rush (5v5, 3v3, or Threes)
HUT Rush is both an offline and online mode located on the main HUT Central hub, and you'll choose to do a 5v5 game, 3v3 game, or Threes game.
Each will challenge you to draft a squad of cards and players that you don't own, which can help level the playing field early on for players who still don't have a strong HUT 22 squad.
Right now, the 3v3 mode is X-Factor Rush with an emphasis on new Superstar X-Factor players. The 5v5 mode is OHL Draft, and the final is Threes.
Threes, which operates in HUT Rush with the same lax ruleset you'll find playing NHL Threes outside of Ultimate Team, is currently doing a themed Mascot Training Camp.
For now, HUT Rush Threes lets you draft three mascots and you'll be able to go to battle with other mascots on the ice.
It's not known the exact frequency with which the HUT Rush modes will change, but they do expire and will refresh with new ways to challenge yourself over time.
HUT Squad Battles
HUT Squad Battles take place offline, but you'll be facing off against other squads created by HUT 22 players.
If you want to get a feel for some of the teams you might be up against when playing online while temporarily removing some of that challenge, HUT Squad Battles is a great way to do that.
HUT Challenges
HUT Challenges are unique scenarios with a specific difficulty and time limit where you're challenged to complete a series of goals in the game.
Sometimes you'll need to score a certain amount of goals, or get some big hits, and HUT Challenges tend to be tiered where you'll need to complete one in order to unlock the next.
Exhibition Game
While listed under the Single Player tab of NHL 22 Ultimate Team, you can play online or offline with an Exhibition Game.
Either pit yourself against the computer, a great way to test your current squad, or play Online Co-Op and team up with a friend.
HUT Rivals & HUT Champions
The two core online HUT 22 game modes are linked to each other, as you'll need to first quality in HUT Rivals to get to HUT Champions.
HUT Rivals will rank you after a series of matches and then seek to pit you against others in your same division and with a similar skill level.
Based on your performance in HUT Rivals, that will determine if you qualify for HUT Champions and can try to prove yourself as one of the best HUT players in the world.
HUT Objectives
No matter which of the many HUT 22 game modes you're playing in, one thing you'll always be working towards is completion of HUT Objectives.
This challenges tend to be completed over multiple games, and completing one will usually net you a pretty solid amount of HUT Coins.
If you're just starting, make sure to go do the Tutorial Objectives, which only require you to click on each Objective to read a brief tutorial of that aspect of HUT 22.
Earning Coins & Points
You'll earn HUT Coins to spend on cards and packs doing basically anything in NHL 22 Ultimate Team.
As you play the various game modes in Hockey Ultimate Team, you'll receive Coins after completing each game and often get more for a better performance.
NHL Points are only acquired by purchasing them on your game's store with real-world money, and you can then use them in-game to buy Packs.
Buying Packs & Using the Auction House
While you'll earn many Packs just through playing NHL 22 Ultimate Team, earning them as rewards, and occasionally getting a free reward, you can also buy them.
Using Coins or Points, you can purchase Packs at the Store inside HUT 22, but keep in mind this is always a risk and the Pack you purchase could be a dud.
You can instead choose to spend your Coins in the Auction House, where you'll search for specific players and cards and bid or purchase that exact card, removing the uncertainty from the situation.
Completing Sets
One of the larger goals you'll have in HUT 22 is completing Sets of cards, which allow you to exchange them for more Packs which could hold even more powerful cards.
Keep in mind that any cards you use to complete a Set will be destroyed and no longer of use to you, so don't exchange something too valuable that you could've done more in your lineup.
