NBA 2K22 has finally answered perhaps one of the most asked questions players were waiting for, and fans may not love what we've learned about cross platform.
NBA 2K22 will not be bringing any cross platform play to the new title, leaving some players disappointed. However, recent server bugs on current gen systems could push it in a new direction.
Let's take a look at the recent bugs and why NBA 2K22 decided against cross platform play.
UPDATED - Server bugs causing crashes on current gen
Something that can easily cause NBA 2K22 to push towards cross platform play is all of the server bugs plaguing current gen users.
This first started immediately upon release and has continued since. It commonly occurs on the Cancha Del Mar, the current gen equivalent of The City. The NBA 2K22 Error Code 727e66ac is actively preventing players from joining the servers.
The NBA 2K22 servers say that everything is "Up And Running", however, players are still having plenty of connectivity issues.

Cross gen capability for VC in NBA 2K22
The most recent news we've discovered is that VC will transfer between current and next gen consoles.
It's important to remember that this only means PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. This is a huge step towards future cross play in NBA 2K, as players will now be able to transfer funds.
We aren't sure whether or not this will be the only cross gen feature added to the game, but we hope it's one of many.
Even if we won't be able to cross play this year, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
Why NBA 2K22 decided against crossplay
Unfortunately, many gamers were hoping that this would be the first NBA 2K game with crossplay capability.
However, 2K sports decided to leave it out this year and go with cross-progression.
Though it's only speculation, 2K likely wanted to keep players on their own platforms, but it could be that Microsoft and Sony couldn't come to a mutual agreement about crossplay capabilities.
Either way, gamers are left without the chance to play against their friends on other platforms.
What the lack of crossplay means for you
Essentially, it means you won't have a chance to play against your Microsoft friends if you're playing on a Sony console.
Although it's the first full year on next gen consoles, NBA 2K22 won't have the function to allow crossplay.
It's an unfortunate circumstance but the new title from 2K will have cross-progression. Giving players who enjoy MyTEAM a silver lining.
Cross-Progression: How it works
If you haven't had the chance to see what NBA 2K22 means by cross-progression, here's what you need to know. The function of cross-progression will allow players of MyTEAM to play between generations of the same console family.
This is great for players who have yet to buy a next gen console but plan to in the future. If you're planning on a console upgrade be sure to buy the cross-gen bundle. It is digital only but it ensures you'll keep your progression in MyTEAM should you decide to purchase a new console.
Disclaimer: This feature only works for consoles in the same family, if you move from an Xbox One to a PS5, cross-progression will not be available.
