WWE 2K22 news remains relatively thin, but a recent job posting by Visual Concepts may have revealed some key Next Gen details.
Here's everything we know so far about WWE 2K22 on Next Gen thanks to the latest reveal and plans by the title's developer.
WWE 2K22 job posting reveals Next Gen plans
While we've gotten some previews of WWE 2K22, they've remained relatively silent on the basic question of which platforms the title will be released on.
Back with the launch of WWE 2K20, the Next Gen platforms had yet to even be released, and the delays even following the cancellation of WWE 2K21 mean that WWE 2K22 has likely been in development since before Next Gen's arrival.
Now that a new job posting has surfaced on Visual Concepts own website, it looks like the WWE 2K22 developer may have tipped their hat regarding Next Gen.
The posting is for "Software Engineer, Graphics (WWE)" and lists the following under the "What You Will Do:" section for the job itself: "Pioneer new techniques to leverage advanced features of Gen 9 (PS5, Xbox Series X) consoles."
On top of that, the posting also states that the position will have this Graphics Software Engineer "shape the look of the next WWE2K game."
Unfortunately, with the timing of this posting and WWE 2K22 now just two months away from launch, it looks very unlikely the title will hit PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
With all of the issues that WWE 2K20 had at launch when it comes to quality control and game-breaking glitches, it makes sense for Visual Concepts to err on the side of caution if they had only been handling current gen development.
WWE 2K23 jump to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S could bring huge graphics leap
While for some fans it will be disappointing that WWE 2K22 may not land on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, there are good signs for what an eventual release on Next Gen could bring.
One big question mark is the release timing, as the WWE 2K series traditionally aimed for an October release rather than a March release.
WWE 2K23 will be their opportunity to either make the March window their new standard or revert back to the old model, and there's a slight chance we could see both.
NBA 2K21 and Madden 21 both dropped on Next Gen after the current gen versions of those games had already been released, and it's possible WWE 2K22 will target an October launch of a Next Gen version of WWE 2K22.
However, that possibility seems slim, and it's much more likely we won't be seeing WWE 2K hit Next Gen until the launch of WWE 2K23, but it could be truly next level in pure graphics.
The job posting explains that the engineer will "develop shaders and techniques to advance the visual quality of in-game characters," and explicitly states Visual Concepts has "big plans for the next generation of visual realism at 60 fps."
The leap from 30 fps to 60 fps could make a huge different in smoothness and quality of entrances and in-ring action, but it may be quite some time before we see any of that in action.
