Pokémon Unite was originally announced back in June 2020 during a Pokémon presentation from Nintendo. The game caught the attention of many fans as it's Pokémon's first foray into the MOBA genre.
Here's everything we know about the newest title in the Pokémon franchise.
Pokémon Unite Release Date
Pokémon Unite is releasing this July on Nintendo Switch. A mobile version of the game is also due, but this is still being actively developed and will not be ready until September.
While we don't have a specific date in July yet, the overall feeling after the announcement this week is that they're just waiting a little longer to give a date and it has nothing to do with the possibility of a late delay.
Is Pokémon Unite Free-To-Play
Yes, Pokémon Unite will be free-to-play from launch. Many MOBA titles are free-to-play as they are supported through monetization of in-game items like character skins. It's also possible that the wildly popular Battle Pass feature could be used as well.
Will Pokémon Unite Be Cross-Play?
Developer TiMi studios have stated their intent for Pokémon Unite to be both cross-play and cross-progression between the Nintendo Switch and Mobile versions.
The cross-progression feature will require a Nintendo account or Pokémon Trainer account to enable.
What Is A MOBA
A MOBA is a multiplayer online battle arena. The games that best embody what a MOBA is, are League of Legends and DOTA 2. These titles are what pretty much every other MOBA title aspires to be.
Pokémon Unite does not appear to be trying to throw out the rulebook when it comes to MOBA games and is following the path set out by other popular titles in the genre. When a MOBA tries to be too different from the expected, say like, Heroes of the Storm, popularity tends to fall off long term.
