Taking advantage of certain skills and abilities in combat are vital in some of the tougher fights. While simple upgrades are great, it's coils that really change the game in Horizon Forbidden West's combat. Below are all the details you need on Coils in Horizon Forbidden West, including how to get them and how to equip them to Aloy's gear.
How to Get Coils & What They Do
Coils boost certain stats of your weapons or gear in the game. Say you have a bow that does fire damage, you can equip a Coil that boosts the amount of fire damage it does. There are coils that provide all kinds of percentage boosts, including buffs against certain kinds of damage.
To actually get coils in Horizon Forbidden West, you have a few options. You can do any of the following:
- Loot them from chests in Rebel bases and Old World areas
- Loot from enemies you kill, human and machine
- Buy them from merchants
How to Equip Coils in Horizon Forbidden West
Once you've got some, you can equip them by pressing the touchpad to bring up your inventory.
Then, head to the weapon or armor outfit you'd like to equip a coil to press square to open up the coils. You then just need to press X on the one you want to use to equip it.
How to Get More Coil Slots
When you first get a weapon in Horizon Forbidden West, it'll only have one available coil slot, with the other two (if it has them) locked.
Thankfully, it's pretty simple to get more of them - you need to upgrade the weapon or armor to unlock more.
When at a workbench anywhere on Horizon Forbidden West's map, you can upgrade weapons, provided you have the required Metal Shards and machine parts.
Usually, the middle and final upgrades will unlock extra coil slots, but that changes depending on the rarity of gear.
