PES 2020: Barca star Gerard Pique running brand new eFootball competition with $2 million prize pool

Eyebrows were raised when Konami announced their new football game eFootball PES 2020 - with the Japanese developer emphasising the competitive aspect of their new game. 

Well, more has been revealed at Gamescom, with the eFootball side of things showing a new competitive calendar for PES 2020.

Backed by Barcelona and Spanish centre back Gerard Pique's company Esports Media Rights (EMR), eFootball will be played out through two separate tournaments, and Konami will crown the world's best Football player and professional club.

The "eFootball.Pro" tournament will see the best professional players represent their clubs to compete against the top eFootball teams on the planet.

This is an exclusive league for professional players belonging to real-world football clubs from Europe that will compete against each other in the name of their club.

  • Competition format: 3v3 CO-OP.
  • Only professional players belonging to a European club are eligible to enter eFootball.Pro and the prize money will be awarded to their club
  • Clubs will be responsible for selecting their own players. They will be largely chosen from last season’s professional players and those who participated in the recent Regional and World Finals of Konami's previous esports competition, PES LEAGUE.

The "eFootball.Open" tournament will be open to all users through the new in-game mode "Matchday". An open bracket to see if anyone not already sided with an esports team or organisation can come through the ranks and tackle the professionals. 

The amateur eFootball tournament previously known as PES League is now reborn as eFootball.Open, and through the new online Matchday mode makes esports accessible to everyone.

  • Competition format: 1v1
  • Users will be separated into classes according to their level
  • Top-tier users will have a chance to win prize money by proceeding to Regional and World Finals after Online qualifiers

UEFA eEURO 2020

The official esports tournament of next summer's European Championships come with the licensing for UEFA Euro 2020, and the "eEuros" will form part of eFootball as part of the additional competitions in the calendar.

All 54 UEFA recognised territories will be represented in that particular tournament next summer, with other confirmed tournaments taking place in Thailand, Japan, Americas and Asia.
