As more ratings come out in Madden 22, we've had a chance to comb through them to find anomalies that others might've overlooked.
The more notable one that's gaining traction is Colin Kaepernick's rating for Madden 22. Now, this raises a couple of questions surrounding the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback.
Let's go over his Madden 22 rating, the quarterbacks he's rated higher than, and why it should be adjusted.
Colin Kaepernick's Madden 22 rating
Colin Kaepernick returns to Madden 22 as a free agent with an 81 OVR rating. Now, this isn't solely interesting because of the rating but because of the quarterbacks, he's rated ahead of.
The Madden 22 ratings are always something that's quite confusing when the game first comes out but Kaepernick is the only player we haven't actually seen play since January of 2017.
When checking out the player card above, you'll see that Colin Kaepernick is in the top 15 of quarterbacks in Madden 22. This is strange considering there's no analytics to go off of since 2017.
What's more strange is some starting quarterbacks he's rated ahead of.
Key QB's rated below Kaepernick
First of all, Colin Kaepernick definitely belongs in the game. The last thing we want to do is try to lobby against him being in the game at all.
However, a few quarterbacks he's rated above just don't quite add up. Mainly because it's been such a long time since we've seen him play and these ratings are supposed to be updated every year.
Here are some key starting quarterbacks that come in with a lower Madden 22 rating:
- Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers - 78 OVR
- Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings - 79 OVR
- Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers - 80 OVR
Kirk Cousins has had a longer career than Colin Kaepernick, but from a statistical standpoint, he's a much better quarterback. His completion percentage is 67% while Kaepernick finished his career with 59.8%.
All starting quarterbacks with a lower rating
You could argue that a few of these quarterbacks should have a lower rating than Colin Kaepernick in Madden 22. However, some of them won't make any sense at all.
Here's the full list of starting QB's rated below Kaepernick in Madden 22:
- Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers - 80 OVR
- Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings - 79 OVR
- Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers - 78 OVR
- Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars - 78 OVR
- Jared Goff, Detroit Chargers - 77 OVR
- Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals - 77 OVR
- Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers - 76 OVR
- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Washington Football Team - 75 OVR
- Zach Wilson, New York Jets - 75 OVR
- Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins - 73 OVR
Our rating for Colin Kaepernick
Although he definitely belongs in the game, Kaepernick shouldn't have such a high rating with no data to support it.
Madden ratings are supposed to evolve every year. Still, EA continues to give a player who hasn't played since 2017 a top 15 quarterback rating. Had he landed somewhere around a 75 OVR, we wouldn't argue.
This is a great step for inclusion and a good campaign for Kaepernick to make his way into the NFL. However, they discredit the QB's he's rated higher than by giving him such a generous rating. To see the Top Ten QB's in Madden 22, head here!
