We're quickly learning more about the direct sequel to Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It looks set to be the franchise's next game.

Set to release in 2022, thanks to several leaks, information has been slowly rising to the surface.

With that in mind, here's what we know of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 so far.

LATEST - Warzone 2 Reveal Incoming

As part of a content creator call that took place recently, Warzone 2 was made official and is set for a reveal soon.

Release Date

It's a foregone conclusion that a new Call of Duty will hit the shelves this year just by looking at the franchise's usual patterns. Adhering to Activision Blizzard's annual cycle, one can guess that the game should be expected in the latter half of 2022.

The typical release window for a Call of Duty game tends to be between October and November, and it's safe to assume that trend will continue. Adding onto that, industry insiders have directed towards an October launch with a Summer reveal in response to the franchise's latest edition, Vanguard's poor sales.

Leaks

Thanks to leaks back in September, information regarding Call of Duty in 2022 was already present. Teased as "Project Cortez", the upcoming game will supposedly have players join US special forces fighting a "covert war against Colombian drug cartels," according to a report from VGC. The campaign is set to take after the popular game, Read Dead Redemption 2 with its brutal realism, gore, and unique death animations according to leakers.

Multiplayer

For the game's beloved multiplayer, players can expect five classic Modern Warfare maps to return, namely Favela, Terminal, Highrise, Shipment, and Quarry. They will all be remastered versions of CoD: Modern Warfare which was released back in 2009.

Game Modes

Modern Warfare 2 is set to take on new game modes that take after popular games, Escape from Tarkov and Rainbow Six Siege.

Not much is known about this Tarkovesque game mode, but one leak has suggested that it is currently in development. Adhering to how Tarkov plays, the game mode's objective is to "accumulate loot within several separate maps, before successfully extracting," according to one source.

This Tarkov style game mode has allegedly been in development since the first Modern Warfare remake. According to CoD leaker Tom Henderson, the mode, known as DMZ, Demilitarized zone, "has been in some form of development since early 2018."

The Rainbow Six Siege mode is also in the works, according to prominent CoD insiders. Known as Attackers v. Defenders, the mode gives a more tactical approach to round-based matches. This forces players to trade away their guns blazing tendencies that are known and loved in the series for a slower-paced style of gameplay.

Platforms

As for as information goes, no specific platforms have been announced for Modern Warfare 2. Similarly to when it comes to release dates, we can surmise what platforms the newest Call of Duty installment will be on based on previous releases.

Modern Warfare 2 is likely to be hitting all of the known platforms, these include PlayStation 4 and 5—after Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer confirmed—, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and PC. And with Crossplay being a part of both Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, we can expect the same to happen with Modern Warfare 2.

However, once again, Call of Duty insider, Tom Henderson, suggested that Call of Duty's run of being available on past generation consoles might be coming to an end, so it's something to keep an eye on.
