GTA Online launched alongside Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto V has been out for a long time - since then, we've seen Rockstar Games continually support GTA Online but Grand Theft Auto V has been left in the dust. The content is varied and GTA Online is a staple on a lot of hard drives around the world - it's also making Rockstar Games a lot of money. With GTA 6 an inevitability, a legitimate question about GTA Online's future has to be raised: Is GTA Online going to transfer across to GTA 6 - with new content and a new map - when it is released? Or, is it going to drift into its own entity when Grand Theft Auto V is finally laid to rest.
Spending your money on Shark Cards is an expensive way to make a quick buck in GTA Online - but it's an important way to get the most out of the game given the fact that new content is often locked behind a GTA$ paywall. Is the investment into GTA Online worth it or should you start winding down in anticipation of GTA 6's release?
Is GTA Online going to transfer to GTA 6?
This is a tough question to answer at the moment - right now, we don't even know if the next Grand Theft Auto game is going to be called GTA 6. So... Asking if GTA Online is going to transfer to GTA 6 is a question that can't really be answered definitively right now - even though it's one we should start thinking about.
With the amount of money invested into GTA Online by both Rockstar Games and the players, we don't think GTA Online is going to shut down anytime soon. We also think that GTA Online is going to remain its own entity, as opposed to being a system transferred to GTA 6 when it launches.
You can already download GTA Online as a title separate from Grand Theft Auto 5 right now - just like Red Dead Online - and there's a fair chance that it will just undergo a major update when GTA 6 comes out. Rockstar Games has started to explore additional locations in post-launch expansions for GTA Online - the Cayo Perico Heist takes you to an entirely new island.
With the power of next-gen consoles at Rockstar Games' disposal, we could even see Los Santos available in GTA Online alongside the new main map that's coming with GTA 6 - although we don't know where it's set just yet.
The bottom line of all this is this, though - we don't think that GTA Online is going to transfer to GTA 6 when it launches. However, it's not going to delete any of your content either. GTA Online is its own beast now and that's going to continue for a long time.
