Getting a PlayStation 5 isn't the easiest task, but Sony's latest console and the next-generation of gaming has been around for over a year now. The opportunities to pick one up are slowly becoming more frequent and - with any luck - they'll soon be widely available. If you do own a PS5 and you're a fan of GTA Online, you might be asking the logical question: Where is GTA Online on PS5?
GTA Online is a hugely popular game and titles of a similar size and ilk are all slowly starting to make the jump, so why hasn't Rockstar Games yet? Well, we know the Expanded and Enhanced version is coming... So here's what we know about when GTA Online is making the jump and getting a PS5 upgrade.
When does GTA Online come out for PS5?
As it stands, at the moment, Rockstar Games hasn't confirmed that they're going to release a native next-gen version of GTA Online for PS5 consoles. From our understanding, it looks like the Expanded and Enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto V is going to solely be the single-player parts of the game. This is far from a bad thing, but it's not what a lot of people are after.
If we look at the recent trend of next-gen updates, very few of them include an update to the Multiplayer portion of the game. A lot of next-gen releases are either released fully as a next-gen game on Day One, or they're just left on current-gen consoles. When you couple this with the fact that very few popular online multiplayer games that can be considered on the same scale as GTA Online are available on both generations of consoles, it doesn't look promising.
Fortnite and Destiny 2 have native next-generation releases, but Apex Legends, Warzone, and notably the more-recent Red Dead Online are all still on current-gen consoles.
However, it wouldn't be impossible to bring GTA Online to PS5. The Enhanced and Expanded version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is due to release in March 2022 - on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA Online is played on the same map, with a lot of the same weapons and vehicles... All the assets are there, more or less, and it would make sense for Rockstar Games to make the most of them.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 still MIA on the release calendar, it seems certain that GTA Online will continue for quite a while yet. It feels like GTA Online on PS5 is an inevitability - but we don't have anything solid yet.
