PS5 Storage: UI reveal could confirm storage as 664GB not advertised 825GB

After a long wait, Sony finally revealed the PS5’s UI, or dashboard, in a recent YouTube video.

With details such as native 4K confirmed for the User Interface, the reveal of the graphical style used also allowed us to check past leaks.

One such leak, originally seen on Reddit, seems to have been verified by the newly seen UI reveal. YouTuber YongYea pieced the information together in a recent video.

Let’s take a look at what the leak included, and what it means for the PS5!

Less storage than we thought?

The image, which can be seen here, seems to show that the PS5’s internal storage SSD will be capable of 664GB of applications.

Whilst this may be disappointing for some, it is common for consoles to be advertised with a certain amount of storage, whereas the reality is slightly different.

DASHBOARD: The PS5's dashboard is another step up from the PS4

This is the case with the PS4 Pro for example, my current console. The advertised 1TB of storage manifests itself as 862GB of useable space.

Of course, this is a development kit so it could be a different ammount for those that go to market.

Why is this number smaller than the advert?

Much like a computer, the next-gen consoles (and current-gen) will feature powerful Operating Systems.

In order to be powerful and complete the required tasks, these OS’s need to be considerably large.

Without an Operating System, your next-gen console would be no more useful than a brick!

TRUSTED LEAK: This reveal provides a basis to judge previous leaks

As such, it seems that roughly 161GB (825GB minus the leaked 664GB) is taken up with dedicated storage for the OS of the PS5.

However, it is also possible that this space is occupied by other essentials such as various themes, presets for various system settings and so on.

PS5 release date and price

If you can find one, the PS5 is currently available for pre-order from all major retailers.

If not, we are sure the console will be available again for Black Friday and in-stores following the console's launch on 12 November.
