Gamescom 2021's Opening Night Live gave us the next Marvel video game and it was worth tuning in for. Firaxis Games are bringing us Marvel's Midnight Suns, a tactical RPG that will introduce a brand new story and character into the Marvel universe.
This could be a game worth keeping an eye on and we've already seen our first look at gameplay. Here's the latest...
UPDATE - Gameplay Revealed, surprising mechanics shown off
It appears there was more than meets the eye with Marvel's Midnight Suns. Despite being a tactical RPG by nature, it also had TCG-Esque card mechanics.
Not an often-used feature, battles will be much more strategic as you likely build an action deck for each hero and manage their resources accordingly. We can't wait to hear about how things work in a little more detail.
Hours away from seeing what it's all about...
Firaxis Games is set to reveal early gameplay footage from Marvel's Midnight Suns later today and we can't wait to see how it's going to work. It looks like it's going to be solid graphically, as you'd imagine, but we don't know how well superheroes are going to translate into XCOM's tactical RPG format.
The first screenshots are starting to emerge online, though, and we have one below...
In addition to this, we know a little bit about The Hunter - Marvel's Midnight Suns' new character. They're going to be a customisable "protagonist" which should shake up the XCOM format a little bit.
In the world of Marvel's Midnight Suns, The Hunter is a legend amongst those that chase after demons and they might be the only one who can stop Lillith - their mother - from completing the Darkhold and unleashing Hell on Earth.
GAMEPLAY - Reveal coming in a matter of days
Marvel's Midnight Suns have only just been announced and we're already getting a gameplay reveal? We don't know what Firaxis Games are up to, but we're hardly in a position to complain.
The gameplay reveal is expected to be broadcast at the following times on September 1st:
- 11:30 PST
- 14:30 EST
- 19:30 BST
At the moment, all we know is that Marvel's Midnight Suns is going to be a "tactical RPG". Firaxis Games and 2K are the teams behind the XCOM series, so this has everyone expecting that Midnight Suns is going to follow this gameplay format. It isn't the worst thing, but it'll be interesting to see how it makes the most of Marvel's characters and their abilities.
When does Marvel's Midnight Suns come out?
Marvel's Midnight Suns is due to release in March 2022 - at the moment, we don't know much more about it. It isn't going to be like Marvel's Avengers though - for better or worse... Opening Night Live did offer us a fantastic look at the cast of characters we're going to get to play with and what Midnight Suns is actually all about - Alessia Cara and The Warning's Enter Sandman cover certainly sets the mood.
The Cinematic Trailer - that was revealed at Opening Night Live - is truly epic and you can check it out below:
Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel, Blade, Wolverine... This really has got a little bit of something for everyone.
Who are the Midnight Suns, anyway?
Canonically, Marvel's Midnight Sons are made up of Ghost Rider, Morbius - The Living Vampire - Blade, and everyone else with a tenuous link to the supernatural in the Marvel Universe. Captain America - as leader of the Avengers - is usually in and around danger, so of course, he's going to be here. We just wish we were getting more Black Panther after the War For Wakanda Expansion!
Of course, Tony Stark is involved and Captain Marvel is often pulled in to deal with some of the tougher enemies that the Midnight Sons might deal with and Marvel's Midnight Suns look like they're going to be tackling the toughest of the tough.
Lillith is mentioned in the Midnight Suns Cinematic Trailer - seen above - and she's the main villain the Midnight Sons face in Marvel's comics.
" Doctor Strange gathered a loose-knit confederation of mystically powered heroes (a.k.a. the Nine) to serve as mankind's first line of defense against the Mother of Demons, Lilith, and her children, the Lilin. After Lilith freed herself from the belly of an ancient beast known as the Leviathan, Strange began manipulating certain heroes, knowing that Lilith would ultimately seek to rip open the walls between the Earthly dimension and the one where her children resided."
The Darkhold is known by many names in Marvel's many universes - and it features at the end of WandaVision on Disney Plus. This is what Lillith is after and it is essentially a way to open up Earth to Chthon, an evil Elder God. So... Marvel's Midnight Suns is going to tackle some of the biggest enemies in the Marvel Universe with a team of Marvel's biggest heroes? We're in.
