Wrestling and gaming go hand in hand. There's no better example of how both worlds can coexist than Kenny Omega, who returned to a wrestling ring after over a year on the sidelines using a new track penned by Final Fantasy XIV and XVI composer Masayoshi Soken.
The long-awaited return happened at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5. Multiple wrestling promotions from Japan, the United States, and Mexico co-produced the massive event, in which the 41-year-old wrestler fought 27-year-old Gabe Kidd. As fans expected, it turned out to be an early match-of-the-year contender.
Before the match, Omega shared via X (formerly Twitter) that he would be debuting a new track composed by Soken. Not only that, Final Fantasy VII legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu and Jason Miller would provide vocals as well.
The track delivered the goods. If you're unfamiliar with Soken's style, he's known for bombastic, intense, orchestral sounds with a mix of rock. Sadly, the song is unavailable on any streaming platform and hits every right note to make Omega's entrance as imposing as possible.
Omega is an avid gamer, and in particular, a Final Fantasy fan. His signature move is named after FFVII's big baddie, Sephiroth: the One Winged Angel.
In fact, the Canadian has done multiple gaming-themed wrestling entrances in the past, from Street Fighter to Undertale, with Destiny 2 in between.
Still, perhaps his most iconic entrance came during 2023's Wrestle Kingdom, New Japan Pro Wrestling's own WrestleMania, when Omega finally made his dream come true by coming out to the ring dressed as Sephiroth to the tune of One Winged Angel.
Fans hope that this new song will be Omega's standard entrance song moving forward in NJPW and AEW. Others make a compelling argument for keeping it as a "special occasion" track, which would certainly add to its aura.
