Final Fantasy XVI has gotten a release window following PlayStation's State of Play.

Final Fantasy XVI Gameplay Trailer at State of Play

During the event, the developers of the game, Square Enix, showed off the game's first gameplay trailer.

In the trailer titled "Dominance," fans of the franchise got a taste of how the combat will play out in the game, as well as some extra bits of information on the world of Valisthea.

The combat resembles one of the Final Fantasy VII remakes, one that contains high-speed real-time action.

This iteration of the series will aim to be darker in comparison to its predecessors, having primal powers be immense and terrifying. This can also be seen by what is presumably players taking a stand against those very same primal powers and fighting against them.

Known as Eikons, they are powerful monsters that resemble the summons of Final Fantasies of the past and seem to be under the control of humans known as Dominants.

"Hopefully with this preview, you all were able to get a better picture of what actual gameplay will entail — namely, high-octane battles featuring our protagonist Clive Rosfield wielding a full arsenal of attacks unique to the game’s many Eikons (summons)," said producer Yoshida Naoki in a PlayStation Blog post following the State of Play. "Not to mention epic clashes between the Eikons themselves that put you right in the action."

Final Fantasy XVI Release Date

Final Fantasy XVI has an expected release date of summer 2023 and will be on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.

The title was first announced in 2020 of last year solely on the PS5 with a trailer that went against the typical bright and hopeful themes that the series has shown off in the past.
