Wuthering Waves gameplay and combat
Seamless exploration is paramount in open-world games, and Wuthering Waves takes it to the next level with a movement system that's a breath of fresh air.
Alongside the regular stamina system for running, gliding, climbing, and swimming. Here, characters have the ability to run up a mountain and even sprint across walls. The game also features double-jumping and grapple hooks, making exploration incredibly immersive, and enhancing the exhilarating sense of traversal.
A big part of what distinguishes Wuthering Waves is its combat system. Kuro Games prioritises more intricate, in-depth combat that’s a lot more mechanically demanding. Dodge counters and QTE (Quick Time Event) sections add a layer of complexity that rewards player mastery. Key mechanics include:
- Evasion: Performing an Evasion consumes stamina similar to dashing, allowing you to swiftly dodge enemy attacks in any direction. Pressing the normal attack button after a perfect dodge triggers a powerful Evasion Counterattack.
- Parry: Many enemy attacks can be parried, signaled by a white circle on the screen. A successful parry not only negates damage but also builds the enemy's stagger gauge. When the gauge is full, the enemy becomes stunned, opening them up for a flurry of attacks.
In Wuthering Waves, character switching (QTE) becomes a powerful tool with the Concerto system. By building Concerto Energy through attacks, skills, and even Echo Abilities, players can trigger Concerto Effects. These not only deal bonus damage upon switching characters, but also grant the incoming character a resource to unleash an attack, known as a Concerto Skill. As you progress further into the game, more resource-farming domains will be unlocked. Resource Domains provide the materials needed to level up characters, weapons, and their enhancements. Expect to encounter waves of weaker enemies as you gather these resources. On the other hand, World Bosses and Weekly Bosses give players the chance to test their mettle against single-boss battles that take patience and strategic team compositions to defeat.
Wuthering Waves also features its equivalent of Abyss and Simulated Universe in the form of Tower of Adversity and Elusive Realm. Tower of Adversity has time-limited challenges and Elusive Realm is a rogue-like dungeon.
Wuthering Waves characters
Wuthering Waves currently boasts a cast of 16 stunning anime-style characters. Each character is equipped with a diverse arsenal, including chain normal attacks, heavy attacks, a unique Resonance Skill (E), a powerful Resonance Liberation (Ultimate/R), Outro Passive and Intro Ability (which forms the QTE), and a special passive that enhances a part of their kit called Forte Circuit.
Each character can also wield one active Echo ability, which, when pressed, temporarily transforms them and performs that Echo’s special ability.
There are five weapon types: Rectifier, Gauntlets, Broadblade, Pistol, and Sword. While the game forgoes elemental reactions, Wuthering Waves offers a variety of elemental variations across characters and enemies, which includes Fusion (Fire), Glacio (Ice), Electro (Lightning), Aero (Air), Havoc (Dark), and Spectra (Light).
Combined, this creates an incredibly active and dynamic playstyle, with each character offering a unique approach to combat.
Wuthering Waves lore
Wuthering Waves unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world forever marked by the Lament, a cataclysmic event that left humanity on the brink of extinction. In the wake of this disaster, unknown beings and monsters have emerged from the shadows. Yet, humanity persevered, adapting to this new reality and forging a fragile coexistence with these hostile beings.
You take on the mantle of the Rover, a mysterious entity awakened from a deep slumber. Driven by your duty to protect this nascent world, you embark on a perilous journey across vast, untamed landscapes. Remnants of a bygone era mingle with dazzling advancements in technology, creating a world brimming with both wonder and danger.
While there have been heated discussions about whether Wuthering Waves will be the “Genshin Impact killer”, many fans are embracing the prospect of healthy competition within the open-world action RPG genre. Competition fosters innovation, ultimately benefiting both games and the players who enjoy them!
