WoW Classic WotLK Obsidian Sanctum Guide: Bosses, Loot, Mechanics & More

Obsidian Sanctum WoW Classic WotLK Guide

Obsidian Sanctum WoW Classic WotLK Guide

Obsidian Sanctum is a different and unique take on the single-boss raid, as coming into World of Warcraft: Classic's latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, it holds one boss and three "mini-bosses."

Alongside Eye of Eternity—the other singular boss raid in the expansion—and Naxxramas, the newly added raid will take part in what is the first PvE-centric test players will encounter in the newest expansion in Classic. It's a first of its kind in World of Warcraft as players will jump into a raid with not just one boss to deal with, but also three other mini-bosses that alter the main bosses' encounter.

With that, here's a guide on Obsidian Sanctum, including its bosses and their mechanics, key loot items, and more.

All Obsidian Sanctum Bosses in WoW Classic WotLK

The Obsidian Sanctum in the Chamber of Secrets is comprised of one boss, Sartharian—the main boss—and three what would be considered mini-bosses in Vesperon, Shadron, and Tenebron, Twilight Drakes.

In the sanctum, the Black Dragon, Sartharion, is tasked with watching over the twilight eggs that reside in it, while also having help from the three drakes.

Mechanics for the Twilight Drakes in Obsidian Sanctum in WoW Classic WotLK

This raid, as opposed to Eye of Eternity, comes completely different when it comes to the single-boss genre. Although you have one big bad boss in the middle, if you don't take out his lackeys, you're in for some tough times ahead.

THREE DRAKES: Vesperon, Shadron, and Tenebron help Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum

If left alive, all three of the Twilight Drakes, Vesperon, Shadron, and Tenebron, not only jump into the fight but also greatly enhance Sartharion with the Will of Sartharion buff. This buff increases Sartharion’s health by 25% with 1 drake alive, 45% with 2 drakes alive, and 65% with three drakes alive. Not only does it makes the fight longer, but it also makes it more difficult.

When it comes to fighting against Vesperon and Shadron, each drake is the typical tank and spank, have your tank take on the target, have your DPS bog it down, and have your healers keep the raid group alive. However, about 15-20 seconds in, they will open a portal, here you'll send in a healer, one off-tank, and all of your DPS. Within the portal, you'll encounter each respective drake's disciple. Just take down the disciple, leave the portal realm and finish off the main drake.

For Tenebron, the same can be expected, however, instead of a disciple within the portal, players will encounter several eggs. You must take down as many eggs as possible. Once done in the portal, any remaining eggs will spawn as whelps which can be killed alongside Tenebron.

Mechanics for Sartharion in Obsidian Sanctum in WoW Classic WotLK

Like any other drake fight, Satharion has his normal dragon-like mechanics. A breath, a cleave, and a tail lash—these should be avoided. However, there's a twist. Because on top of these mechanics, the platform or area where you fight Sartharion, is surrounded by lava and it actively works against you throughout the fight.

GUARDIAN OF EGGS: Sartharion is tasked with protecting Twilight Drake eggs

At certain times in the encounter, "the lava surrounding Sartharion churns!" which makes it spawn huge lava waves. If not avoided, these waves place a DoT on any players caught in them that do considerable damage. The waves themselves are fairly easy to dodge if done correctly as they are huge, obvious, and move slowly. They spawn from either the left or right sides of the fight area and have gaps. Run through the gaps to avoid damage. The location of these gaps is predictable as depending on what wave you get, you can dodge accordingly.

Later on in the fight, adds are summoned, like any other normal boss with adds, just cleave them down with the boss. However, if they are hit by the lava waves, they enrage, gaining a will dill 400% more damage.

If wanting to take down Sartharion with all three of the Twilight Drakes alive, it'll just be all of the mechanics from each boss at the same time. Make sure to clear all of the trash first!
