One of the quickest and simplest ways to check if World of Warcraft's servers are struggling is by going to the official Blizzard Support Twitter, also known as Blizzard CS. If there's a server issue, Blizzard will usually provide information about it on their Social Media.
Blizzard holds support accounts for different regions around the world, which means that chances are you'll be able to find at least one Twitter account to help solve your issues.

- Australia and New Zealand - This account will most likely redirect you to the Americas' for any server issues

Check the Battle.net Launcher
Oftentimes when server issues arise, the own Battle.net launcher you use to play World of Warcraft has a notification stating if there are any ongoing problems with the game's servers.
Just like maintenance scheduling, any server issue notifications will appear towards the top-end of the Battle.net launcher, emphasized clearly to make sure to differentiate it from the rest of the information on the launcher.

Usually, whenever a server issue occurs, Blizzard themselves will reply on the official forums. Here, they tend to give breakdowns of what's going on and what's causing the problems, sometimes giving an estimate of when to expect the servers to be back.
