It's a huge day for PlayStation fans as we have just learned exactly what the Spartacus project really is! While the leaks and rumours were very accurate, Sony might still have some surprises up their sleeve left to reveal.
Now that it's official, let's take a look at everything we know so far about PlayStation Spartacus (or the PlayStation Plus Rebrand)!
LATEST - Playstation Plus Rebranded
It looks like the Spartacus project has been revealed as a major PlayStation Plus rebrand. The name will remain but there are now three tiers of membership to choose from.
Going live in June 2022 (in most major regions) the service will have over 700 titles including PS1 all the way through to PS5 titles included for one monthly, quarterly or annual cost. The base level of the service will still be just like PlayStation Plus as it currently exists.
PlayStation Spartacus Release Date & Reveal
Multiple sources have been very indiscrete about the fact that a reveal for PlayStation Spartacus is due today (Tuesday, 29 March).
It would make sense as the service was set to launch in Spring 2022 and we have quite literally just crossed that barrier. As for a full release date, there is the possibility that the service goes live ASAP following the reveal.
If not, a sensible launch window would be at the start of May. This would give players a chance to fully understand the new system and decide which tier they want to subscribe to. Speaking of tiers...
PlayStation Spartacus Tiers
The PlayStation Spartacus service is set to release with three tiers to choose from. Jeff Grubb was the first to offer greater detail on how this might look upon release. The tier that you subscribe to will come down to what it is you see as most important and desirable about the new-look model.
It's a fairly simple system and the pricing - for now - appears to be fair. The inevitable comparisons will come in with Xbox Game Pass but it's hard to imagine PlayStation Spartacus coming anywhere close to that kind of value for money.
We do hope that there is a way to natively play classic games - at least PS3 titles - on the PS5 as opposed to through streaming but we'll take what we've given at this stage and hope for improvements down the line.
