It offers players a kind-of two-factor authentication and extra security for their account.

Additionally, it has been used to deter people from being toxic. So, it builds a safer atmosphere for players around.

How to add SMS verification to your battle.net account

Here are Blizzard's official instructions on how to add your phone number to your account.

  1. Visit https://account.battle.net/ and log in. Navigate to “Account Details”.
  2. Add your phone number, including the area code, where prompted. Note that the country code must match the designated country listed on your Blizzard account and certain types of phone numbers (like pre-paid and VOIP), cannot be used.
  3. Click “Continue”. You’ll receive an incoming SMS text message prompting you with a verification code. Enter this code in the field and click “Continue” to activate SMS protection.

Why was verification required?

Blizzard did employ this system so that players have extra security measures for their accounts.
