Since the LEC rebranded from the EU LCS in 2019, the format has been cut and dry. 10 teams compete in a double round-robin, and points are converted into playoff seeding.

For years now though fans have been asking for a change in format. Whether it comes as an expansion to 12 or more teams, or in best-of-threes in the regular season, most agree that something needs to happen.

So far, proposals have been focused on reducing the number of best-of-ones teams play in a split. This means we may not be saying goodbye to them altogether.

Other major regions like the LPL and LCK have been playing best-of-threes for a long time, and getting that crucial extra practice for international events. The LEC needs to follow suit if it wants to catch up.

LEC Expansion Rumours

Many fans of the region have also been crying out for more team to come to the LEC. Regional teams like Karmine Corp and KOI with huge fanbases have been the most requested and would be an asset to the LEC.

However, with KOI signing a deal for a partnership with Rogue, and Karmine Corp reportedly in talks with Astralis, these big names may be arriving anyway.

Despite this though, the expansion of the LEC is “inevitable,” head of League of Legends esports in EMEA at Riot Games Maximilian Peter Schmidt has admitted. So fans may get their wish after all. It is however off the cards for the 2023 season.
