GTA Online has become one of the most popular games in the world, allowing players to build their criminal empire along with the rest of the world.
Fans had dreamt of being able to play GTA co-op with friends, now they can.
So, could this influence the direction of GTA 6?
Could GTA 6 Become An MMO?
GTA Online saw its first major map expansion since it first launched in 2014.
The expansion was called the Cayo Perico Heist and brought a load of new content to the game.
With Rockstar open to expanding the game post-launch, could they be testing things for future GTA 6 plans?
World of Warcraft, which was released back in 2004, is still a popular game today and receives regular expansion packs which expand both the game and the map.
Many other MMORPG's, such as The Elder Scrolls Online, have also expanded the games' world post-launch.
Despite not being labelled as such, GTA Online has all of the trademark aspects of an MMORPG.
Players level up their characters, improve stats, gain new weapons and vehicles, as well as try and amass enough fortune to be able to purchase anything you want in the game.
Instead of battling orcs and elves, players fight police and gang members.
Traditional MMORPG's and GTA Online look very different on the surface, but at their cores, they are very similar in the overall experience.
What Does This Mean For GTA 6?
If GTA 6 was to become an online-only MMORPG style game, similar to GTA Online, we could see the full map and story released in parts over many years, with each either being free like the Cayo Perico Heist or paid for like a WoW expansion.
This could allow them to create a vast expansive world without having to delay the game for longer than it already will be, the current rumour is a 2023 release so a decade after GTA V.
We could also see the game return to many iconic, and even new locations.
Classic locations such as Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas could all be in the game, as well as a return to London.
And also the game is currently rumoured to take place in Chicago and South America in addition to the main city.
All of these locations could be expansion packs for the game, which would open up the game and create thousands of hours worth of content for players.
The game is still said to be a single-player experience, which could be achieved even with expansions.
Just because the game could get map updates, it doesn't mean it has to be an online experience.
But, for now, Rockstar hasn't even officially announced the game, so we will just have to wait and see.
