Ever since its release in 2016, Overwatch has been one of the premiere FPS video games as it brought a different take on the genre with its combination of abilities and gunplay.
However, since then, shooters have changed, genres like the now-popular Battle Royale style FPS rose to prominence, and with it came a new feature that is now expected in any FPS title. This is, of course, crossplay.
Due to the game releasing when crossplay was much less far along, Overwatch never entertained the idea. But now for its long-awaited sequel, Overwatch 2, is reaching the second stage of its Beta, it looks like things are changing!
Will Overwatch 2 have crossplay?
Alongside announcing a release date for Overwatch 2 (October 4, 2022), Blizzard also confirmed that the sequel will include both crossplay and cross platform progression as well!
Overwatch 2 will be available on all platforms, this includes PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Battle.net.
Players will be able to play Overwatch 2 on their platform of choice for free as the game's PvP component will be available as "early access." However, they will still have to purchase the game in order to experience its highly-anticipated PvE side which contains the new missions and co-op play.
Blizzard's resident FPS game going free to play is a first for the company as players had to purchase Overwatch to play it, and will make cross platform play all the more accessible for players.
